The o/s/f bearing was indeed the culprit, easily solved with a good hub assy on the tgd breaker, now swapped but it also appears the bottom ball joint was also well shafted, now no rumble and the pas is much lighter.

If you've got spare hubs, I can recommend cleaning them up and refurbing them with new bearings and ball joints and sticking them back on the shelf - next time you need to change a joint or bearing, lob the new one in and get back on the road in double quick time, and refurb the old one again for next time. Same goes for wishbones. Do them when you feel like it, rather than when you don't have a choice!

Yes KevR, thats the plan, i have a local engineering co. That will press out the old bearing and remove the sod of a bottom ball joint, fit new ones fpr a few quid, Handy to keep good units as "ready to fit" i shall be stripping the remainder of the tgd breaker this week for steering rack, rear arms, wishbones etc to keep as spares

Haven't done it myself yet but I've watched Doc get a lower ball joint out very easily and quickly..

You need to remove the disc but leave the steering arm attached... Tap off the heatshield and unbend the tabs locking the ball joint.
A suitably sized cold chisel hammered against the slots in the ball joint gives enough shock to get the balljoint loosened and this joint had been in for many years. Using this technique it took more time to drill out a screw and remove the brake disc than get the ball joint off!

I have also had a steering ball joint refuse to come out, tabs sheared off (even tough correct tool), lots of oxy heat etc etc and it sheared the thread in the hub. Do not be fooled, sometimes you WILL wreck the hub, so having a spare is not a silly idea at all.

There is however the possibility of clearing the steel from the cast iron, if you are prepared to chip it out and unwind with a small wood chisel, along with heat. Lots of patience required but a possibility.

I had a spare pair of hubs which had been on my scrapper, so had been outside on a damp field for many years. The ball joints absolutely refused to budge. Eventually cut through just above the level of the mounting ring with a 1mm cutting disc, then chiselled round. I think the heat from the grinding helped, but mainly it was just giving myself more surface area to clobber! If I'd been doing them on the car, I'd have given up - off the car and in the vice is the way to go.

Struggled for a few hours before trying to remove old bottom ball joints, id rather let someone else have the trouble for a few quid, saves knuckles, fingers and a lot of hammering. Ideally a big f##k off vice is req.
