Rear brake pads

Post by rutter123 »

Just changed the rear pads as they had worn to almost the metal, according to my records they have lasted over 80,000 miles, last changed in june 2007 @ 186k now on 270k. The fronts getting thru 4 sets and a pair of discs since. Anyone beat that or is this normal? Think its the first rears ive ever changed.

I changed the rears on my old 14RE after about 120k, not because they were worn out but I thought I ought to!. I remember being impressed that the baby bolt head 8mm? came loose with a socket at that mileage without too much grief. Good steel. I towed my boat a lot with that 14 too so it did have a rear load to compensate for.
Have not changed rears on my 16's yet at all so probably original (at 165k) but I don't know for sure. Only know they are not shagged, though the calipers could do with a clean as they do not fully release cleanly. About to change the Mintex fronts back to proper Bendix ones.

Good deal, GSF have the Bendix pads too but I paid about 17 quid for them!. Prefer them to the Mintex.

Mintex are ok but do tend to squeal a bit until bedded in i found on the t/d. Bendix are def better but dont last as long about 20k's a set, prob softer compound.

I've fitted a set of rears before, no idea how old they were though, but i'm pretty sure the one's on the TXD lasted 7 years & still had plenty of life left on them. They really hardly get any use, infact the brake discs are more likely to need replacing because they rust out due to lack of use. Fill the boot up is apparently the method of keeping the discs clean & to get the rear pads some wear on them.

Or tow a trailer, even my dinghy one gives the rears some work. Probably about 180Kg all up.
