bosch diesel pump driveshaft seal

Post by themildbunch »

I've just managed to nurse my N/A BX home that keeps cutting out on idle.. It's looks like the driveshaft seal is leaking...

Looking at the two holes on the pump sprocket it looks like it's possible to remove the pump without disturbing the cambelt / timing....

Can anyone confirm this? Given the car's now parked on a hill it'd make my life much easier to do the pump first then move it to replace the belt and this is supposed to be my 'spare' bx I use when one of the other ones are off the road

i know you say you would prefer to remove the pump as the car is on a hill, but you might find it easier to get the car were you can just go the route of the cam belt,
i have fitted a new seal to a BX pump years ago, cant remember if it were Lucas or Bosch though,

the one i did had a large nut in the center of the sprocket, which was a built in puller, so as you unwind the nut it pulled the sprocket off with it

I changed that shaft seal once on a pump and managed to lock the pulley wheel to the engine via those two timing bolts and then remove the pump out the back. Reason I did it that way was to keep the belt position correct. If I were going to change the belt anyway, then I'd do it differently and simply remove the old one first.

Well - i fixed this on my old 19TZD over the weekend.. lots of work doing this job!

The seal on this pump had a kind of steel sleeve around it - I tried unsuccessfully to remove it on the car but lack of space and how stuck it was stopped me.

Once the pump was off the car and in a vice it finally came out with a long, thin and sharp screwdriver - the rubber seal was mush, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did!

I changed a few more of the easy seals on the pump but nothing else was leaking. I should have probably done the pump head seal too as this is not easy or likely to go very wrong if attempted on the car but time was against me and I needed the car on Monday.

Changed the cam and crank seals, new belt on and back together it started perfectly and doesn't leak!
I hate to think of the labour cost in a garage for this job - most local diesel specialists quote around £375 for a full reseal and testing the of the pump without removal and refitting..It's these kinds of jobs that can scrap an older BX like this given it's low value - I'm just glad I persevered and did it myself.
