Saloon?

Post by burraston2006 »

Hi guys,

Now I think I'm about to show my ignorance so here goes:
After reading several topics on here there are people talking about saloon and hatchback BXs. I thought they were all hatches ( apart from the estates!). Can anyone shed some light on this or even post some piccies?
I'll go and stand in the corner now to save time later!

A hatch is a saloon and a saloon is a hatch. No difference bud. But!!, an Estate is an Estate or it could also be a Break!!

I think the difference is that a saloon boot (trunk for our friends over the Pond) opens separately from the back windscreen, a hatchback has the tailgate as all once piece. BXs, therefore, are technically hatchbacks. Even the estate ... *ducks and runs*

Estates are breaks, combi's, avants and shooting brakes to name a just few. LOL
Ohh and I prefer a hatchback saloon.

What about an XM 'hatch' then? That's got the 'magic' thirteenth piece of glass. I suppose that could be a saloon at the same time?! My head hurts now. :)

XM, the glass saloon. Yep, that works for me. What was that tinkling sound? My XM don't work again!

Hatchback and estate. Anything else is either over-complicating it, or just wrong. A saloon is as Sandre says, fixed window, seperate boot. Break might be what they call an estate in other countries, but last time i checked we weren't in other countries. Easy really!

There is a whole web page devoted to naming of car styles. The French got in there at the beginning, and came up with many of the descriptive names, types and functions. Many hark back to horse drawn transport and the French were far more fashion conscious than we Brits about that, till some geezer turned up with a guillotine (Sort of early hatchback on a stick). The Americans have managed to confuse things relating to naming and language reasonably effectively, but since they didn't want to be part of Britain, what do you expect?
I am happy with Hatchback and Estate, but if we are getting technical its a French car so their names should describe it. Seem to think they used the simple terminology to sell the cars to us though.

As for early hatchbacks, the old A40 Farina Countryman was ahead of the game. And it was a sensible design, where most are not, as it had the bottom section drop down into a loading area and the rest go up out of the way in a shorter door. Like all good ideas this disappeared up its own arse in favour of many cars that pretend to be rear loading cars, but are designed more like a washing machine where things pass through a small door into a larger space. So in fact most rear loading cars are bloody useless compared with what they should be. The worst offenders being 4x4 where the Range Rover used the split door again, in almost isolation. The opposition choosing doors that mean room for a Sherman tank behind the car to load anything, none of which can be longer than the load area. Great!
So most of these cars ban overloading in favour of style. How very modern, and boring.

This is your Monday rant over.
