Rear cylinder low pressure returns...

Post by KevR »

...where do they go...?
I've got a leak from the return on the driver's side rear. There are two pipes - one is the breather that goes into the axle tube, the other is the return, which is leaking. Gave it a tug and it came loose - evidently goes into a rubber union above the axle tube. Looking on the other car I can just about see this union - it's just a cranked bit of rubber pipe going into another plastic pipe, but I can't see where that plastic pipe goes.
Tracing the return from the passenger side, that goes across the axle and also disappears behind/above the axle on the driver's side. But again I can't see where it goes.
I also can't see where the return from the height corrector goes.

The leak from the driver's side return is so minimal I'm not really bothered, but it just annoys me that I don't understand where it's supposed to go! Anyone care to enlighten me?

It goes down onto the rear suspension cylinder surely?, IIRC they both go into the rear cylinder gaiter.

EDIT: ebay link to gaiter showing pipe inlets/oulets

EDIT 2 , sorry having re-read you are talking about the other end I assume?

They both connect together in a 'Y' connector above the axle. Then a single plastic pipe goes to the front & connects to the octopus somewhere around the steering rack.

The return from the height corrector has its own plastic pipe to the front & it then also connects to the octopus.

The breathers both go from the cylinder rubbers into holes in the axle & stop there.

Front to back across the front cross member and down the n/s (uk) chassis rail floor section.

I did mine last week, very easy repair.
Y - junction sits above the axle at the o/s of fuel tank.
Just pull it down out of its clips and replace with a windscreen washer
Y - connector and new rubber pipe connectors. It does not really need hose clips
on the new pipes, I always put them on, just to be sure.
