The Irish barnfind

Post by scimitar »

Here it is, after spending 17 years in a barn. I took seats out, looking for new ones now. Hopefully I'll have a nicer set of pics at springtime.

Nice find! =D> Good luck finding an interior for it, and look forward to seeing further pics.

Just a word of warning from my experiences of trying to re-new the interior from a Mk. 1:

The seats will fit, but I suggest you keep the plastic until you get your new seats (just incase, like me, you get one from a cream plastic car).
The door cards won't as Mk. 2's have speakers in the door and Mk. 1's don't. You can't put the speakers on a Mk. 1 as it won't look right as the plastic mates up with the dashboard of a Mk. 2.

So, you will be left with mismatched cloth. Keep yours in safe, dry storage until you can determine what you are going to replace them with.

I was lucky with one of my MK 1s, Mollie. Managed to get a set of leather seats, originally from a MK 1 from Tim Leech. Door trims excepted but they dont look too bad. I too kept all the old seats. I was lucky as they were a similar colour to the paintwork. I have another MK 1, also with Rob Moss that may also be a problem as its seats are also trashed. They may have to be recovered.
In what condition are the hydraulic pipes? Make sure they are in good nick as MK 1s were just steel and had little protection. Mollie and Gloria have both had them all replaced.

She looks great, good luck with her.

Fellas, thanks for advises, I was actually thinking of leaving door cards on as they are in fairly good nick; and I nearly put my hands on these seats: http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/auto-onderd ... ousPage=lr
They would have matched perfectly, unfortunately someone was quicker than me. Gotta keep looking.
Pipes look pretty good, but I'll be replacing them soon anyway, as I'll probably do with half of the car :)

You were unlucky with those seats bud. Fingers crossed more will turn up.

They were actually made for a mk2. It was a red TZD Turbo estate on a K plate. They weren't the original seats from it, Tom sourced them from another mk2 as he didn't like the GTi-style seats in the TZD if memory serves.

Ah, thanks for that bud, i must have got confused along the line somewhere. Easily happens these days. It was the info i was given.

I was very lucky the colour matches Mollie and they will live on for another 20 years. I dont think its a problem fitting MK 2 seats to a MK 1 as most original MK 1 seats are nearly all pretty well buggered by the sun by now. Reupholstering is an expensive route to go.

It was a really high quality leather IIRC, he was really chuffed with them!

I wonder if anyone has got a set of MK 1 seats that are useable?
