engine swap
Is it straightforward to swap a 1.7 turbo diesel engine for a 1.9 normally aspirated, or are there wiring, radiator etc issues? DT

Re: engine swap
You will need the gearbox (different ratios) and the complete exhaust as they are different, as is the radiator plus the bonnet has a special ducting too but if you are going from a TD to a D that doesnt matter so much.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Re: engine swap
Thank you. I would be doing both. I have a 1.9 normal and a 1.7 turbo , but the 1.7 turbo is much more fun to drive, and I can only run one car . I might have to do only the turbo into the normal if I could find someone prepared to buy the normal with unfitted engine (highly unlikely I imagine!).
I'm presuming the job is labour intensive rather than difficult per se?

Re: engine swap
as far as wiring goes just unplug the complete engine loom just below the battery, and the brown TDC sensor wire/plug connector, and leave it all connected at the engine end on both engines,
what colour ids the TD bonnet?????
and were are you located
regards malcolm

Re: engine swap
Worth checking in advance though. I wasn't expecting any major problems fitting a 1.7TD into my 1.6 TRS but I ran into problems left right and centre because the TRS was a 1987 and the TZD was 1990, and somewhere in between the two there must have beeen a wholesale change of wiring types/sizes/connectors. Can't remember the exact details, but I ended up changing the whole dash and most of the loom - basically everything in front of the front seats.citronut wrote:as far as wiring goes just unplug the complete engine loom just below the battery, and the brown TDC sensor wire/plug connector, and leave it all connected at the engine end on both engines,

Re: engine swap
Thank you all for your advice. I have decided to keep them as they are. I shall bring the body/interior of the 1.7turbo up to scratch, and sell the 1.9.
