Is there a Bosch service centre or a diesel specialist nearby?

I found copper washers in the dealer but the fire washers were a problem unless I wanted a bag of 50. I got some from a diesel specialist but they were even scraping the barrel to find some for me.

ebay's great for this sort of thing.. I recently got a set of 'genuine' copper washers (if there is such a thing) and fireseal ones from one of the citroen dealers who often sell there old stock there...

diesel and fuel injection specialists as mentioned would also be a good bet.. A local one offers free injector testing and sent 4 lucas XUD injectors back to me, having tested fine with nice new end caps and washers, although these were about 1mm thinner that the genuine ones I had...

If you haven't got there yet you may find getting each washer out a battle as they like to get really stuck down in the head... I had to use a sharp flat headed screwdriver to chisel the copper washer almost through in several places before it would lever out.. the same but not quite as brutal with the fireseal ones

Thanks again chaps, I did manage to pick some up from the Bosh service centre. I removed all of the injectors and cleaned off the carbon fitted new seals and tested, my smoke problem as gone and I have moved on to the next (ho! the joys of a 27 year old car) the engine is lumpy and shakes the car like it is running out of balance I suspect that is an injector that is only partial delivering the correct amount of fuel, ordered some more injectors off ebay then i was going to change them one at a time or is it best to get the replacements tested at a bosh service centre?
cheers Phil.

Prob worth changing the engine mounts, moreso the gearbox upper mount and the lower engine mount at rear which the o/s driveshaft passes thru, a pain to change but worth it, gearbox mounts do wear out on diesels and the lower one is prob broken or shot due to oil contamination. Thos should eliminate some of your shaking issues, worth having your injectors ASNU cleaned for proper results.

If its running rough, sounds like you may be getting air in the fuel mix somewhere. Could be a leaky leak off pipe?

Worth checking the fuel system.

Ran engine from a different fuel source still same, if I put a screwdriver to the injectors and listen to the handle I get a danging sound on two of the injectors but not on the other two (3 and 4) very little power now but no smoke indicating very little fuel. Stop solenoid as been replaced. Is there any serviceable parts in the pump high pressure side-- the original fault was smoking and intermittent misfire.

Update,------ the problem seemed to be caused by the copper washers supplied by the bosh dealer they are 1.9mm thick whereas the original washers in the engine where 2.1mm thick, that .2mm completely deformed the fireseal when fully tightened up, since removing the fireseals engine is running ok. My plan is fit the 1.9mm washers and then make a gasket out of 1.0mm sheet and fit it between the sleeve and the copper washer, the theory is that the gasket will crush down to about .3mm thus reducing the pressure on the fireseals and the sleeve base. Any comments please?

That's interesting - the specialist that tested my injectors sent them back with thinner washers - I didn't fit them though as I had some genuine ones that were thicker and the previously installed ones were the thicker type too...

Why not find the correct copper washers - maybe worth trying another dealer - some are much more helpful than others or Malcolm Lockwood whose number should be on the forum somewhere...

My BX was vibrating quite noticeably on idle before I swapped the injectors - since putting good ones in with new washers it's been running very well and seems to get slightly better mileage too...

Update,,, What i did in the end was to drop in an m14 crush sump washer onto the top of the injector sleeve and then anneal a 20x14x1.5 copper washer and fitted that to the injector, i then tightened the injector down to about 40lb and removed it again to check that the injector tip had contacted the fireseal washer after which i then refitted the injector and torqued to 66lb. Because of the incorrect sized washers two fireseals where so badly crushed i could not remove them from the sleeve (project for a later date) When I remove the injectors again i would leave the crush washer in place on top of the sleeve and just replace the 20x14x1.5 washer fitted to the injector which is easily removed. Both washers fitted together crush down to about 2.3mm after pressure. Engine running great and no smoke ready for the mot man.
Thanks Phil.
