Oh well, another one gone. It may already be making its cubic journey to China, to return in the guise of a £1 shop tool, as this seems to be the fashion for BX reincarnation this season.

I did discover recently there's quite a trade in French engines/gearboxes going to Africa. That's what I was told by the scrappy operative who called out to his colleague "Did we scrap all those BXs then?". I think you can guess the answer. At least something from them was going to be re-used.

The big trade there is Peugot 504 and 505 saloon/estates, Nissan Bluebirds, any old rwd Japs and stuff like Mercedes & Nissan vans, though I believe they`re slowly starting to move on to more modern devices. They only want the petrol ones as diesel is too expensive apparantly. There`s a roaring trade going on at the moment-a friend of a friend can`t get enough Bluebirds. He chops the roofs off them, piles them two high in a container, chucks the roofs at the back and off they go. Nigeria is (or was) the favoured destination apparantly.
I remember a few years ago going for a late evening walk with the kids when I saw a 504 broken down. I went to see if I could help and the chap had got a train up from London to Lancashire somewhere to buy this complete heap of a car. Said he went all over Britain all week collecting mostly old Peugots for export. Obviously some money in it! If you look in the likes of Loot there`s usually `wanted` adverts for rear wheel drive Japs, Peugots and old Mercedes, most alledging they want them for parts or banger racing. Don`t believe a word of it!

I certainly am aware of the Pug 504/505 African connection: so far as I'm aware the greater part of the African continent would grind to a halt if they were magically removed overnight. Ditto with old Mercs and the more robust Japanese 4x4s.

But it appears that XUD engines are popular in some places. This wasn't a typical scrappyard, mind you, as some of the "non-mainstream" cars had definitely been there for more than the regulation week or two that seems to be the norm now. Quite a refreshing change, even if any accumulated BXs had gone.
