With the bulb removed (as unfortunately mine has been) I should perhaps remove the fuse... Then I can find a way to get a bulb connected up via the oil level indicator (so my pretend ABS light goes out)... Oops I didn't say that ;)

It's a plan....but I think it would fail on the extended timing. :)

I don't think the ABS light ever worked in my ownership and never needed it for MOT. The VOSA test station machine tells the tester whether he needs to test the ABS or not and not the badge on the boot. As it wasn't standard on BX's I don't think it comes up on the MOT testers screen.

the MOT tester do not actually test the ABS as such, but just check the lamp lights then goes out after so many seconds,

any educated tester will be able to see if the car has ABS by all the extra bits under the bonnet,

so dose this car actually have ABS fitted or is it all in the mind  #-o :)

ABS

The car does have ABS fitted but no light. I have had no experience of the ABS cutting in though!

The ABS is not in operational in normal drivingl 'till a problem is sensed. Easy way to test is find a quiet road, do an emergency stop maintaining a high pressure on the pedal until stopped. If during this you feel the pedal pulsing then the ABS is working if the car stops in straight line. :D

Chances are it doesn't work, otherwise why would the previous owner/seller have removed the offending status bulb? :-/ But I shall do a test. Just to be sure.

Below a certain speed, the ABS doesn't actually work, is it 5mph or 10mph?

The BX does not have a speed sensor as its speedo drive is mechanical and system is pre canbus so it is unlikely to know any road speed . It is possible but unlikely that it would be determined by the slip sensors

Having said that, at 5-10mph there is probably sufficient tyre footprint friction to stop quickly without the ABS System being called upon. Also you are unlikely to need its steer around feature if you can stop that quickly.

Under a certain wheel sensor RPM the system can not determine if a sensor is faulty (giving a false reading) or simply very slow and so ABS does not work on a BX at low speed. I would imagine this speed is 10kph given that it is manufactured by ATE.

Remember that the BX system is very primitive compared to a modern system and has its limitations. Generally I would rather not have ABS as I find non ABS BX's more responsive. That said, the day i'm not paying attention and need the ABS, i'll probably be quite glad of it.
