Coolant level

Post by pwykes »

Me again!
Whenever i check the coolant it always looks low when cold, if i fill the radiator to the top eventually it drops back down again to its own level after 100 miles or so, reading from the net the radiator is not the highest point in the system also given that lack of water could blow the head gasket would it be a good or bad idea to fit an expansion tank somewhere near the wiper motor bay.
Thanks Phil.

When cold, the coolant should be level with the top of the rad core, not the very top of the filler. If you keep filling it right to the top all the time you are not allowing any room for expansion when hot. Shouldnt need an expansion tank unless its a turbo diesel or a GTI. If it needed an expansion tank, it would have been fitted with one. If the level is falling well below the top level of the rad core then you need to investigate how its escaping. I assume you have looked in the rad top with the cap off whilst running and not seen any fizzing or bubbles?
