How Many Left GTi conundrum

Post by deltic »

Just been losing a few hours of my life looking at How Many Left? and was wondering whether anyone knew why GTi and GTi autos were each listed twice. I can't see any obvious clues or think of any major (mechanical?) differences. The listings are as follows for the end of quarter 3, 2014 (excluding 4x4s for which 4 are licensed and 19 on SORN), word spacing is as per the website - could this account for the double listing?

BX 19 GTi 17 licensed / 41 SORN (1986-1992)
BX19 GTi 9 / 14 (1989-1993)
BX GTi Hurricane 2 / 1 (1992-1993)
BX 19GTi auto 0 / 4 (1988-1990)
BX19 GTi auto 9 / 3 (1990-1991)

Total BX GTi 37 / 63 (1986-1993) 100 GTis

Total BX 554 / 1100 (1983-1994) 1654 BXs

I was surprised how many BXs, about 2/3, are off the road, presumably most are destined never to be licensed again. Looking at these figures automatic are slightly more likely to be licensed than manual cars and Hurricanes will have some kudos as for being the rarest.

It'll be because someone slightly simple started entering them in wrong, nothing more.

Probably, although 19 should not appear in one of them, it's because there are 2 phase builds of the GTi and all UK GTi's were 19's. 1990 was the change year.

My first new (Phase 1) GTi in 1988 was badged BX19 GTi
My second new (Phase 2) GTi in 1990 was badged just BX GTi as is my current GTi Auto

The first phase had single spoke steering wheels, coloured plastic bumpers and flatter rear wheelarches along with an injection system that was Bosch Jetronic and a distributor for spark distribution.

The second phase had the later and more comfortable 3 spoke steering wheel, new profile painted bumpers, more flared rear wheelarches and the later Bosch Motronic 3.1 injection system that did away with the flappy air-sensor and the distributor. Some other minor embellishments too were included like the speakers in the C pillar.

The GTi remained with the same spoiler although the update to the GTi16v gave that a different spoiler and a body kit.

I'm not sure if the number count on cars has been attributed correctly though.....

Crumbago! 100 recorded as left. Glad I picked one up. It will be one of the SORNed ones and with the greatest will in the world probably will not get touched until next year at the earliest as there is a mountain of work to get through to clear away unwanted stuff first. I expect a good proportion of those SORN cars are owned by folk in the same position, for differing reasons.
I think I am heading to the target of having Walt, the TZD, and Egbert, the GTI, to the exclusion of the others. The one is the best car, the other, well its a GTI and I have some old pants needing got rid of constructively. I confess I think its a minor speculation on value increase too.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 could account for it although there is overlap between the dates of each phase, presumably due to the data being wrongly attributed.

Yes, Not Many Left! would be more appropriate. The 100 GTi club. Have you now acquired an 8v as these figures exclude 16v cars? Proportionally more 16vs survive but fewer are on the road.

Ah, No I have no 8v Gti. So the 16v are counted seperately. Thats not quite so frightening then, overall.

The figures for the 16V do not look so rosy … 27 on the road at the end of the third quarter in 2104 and 93 on sorn. In the past many 16Vs were plundered by go-faster 205GTi owners…

Do we know how many were sold? Should have kept a Black one traded in to me from Worcester about 10 years ago. Had leather interior and A/C. About most desirable? Engine had been cooked, but the Pug people had it anyway. Not sure why I was not interested then. To new I guess.

About 3500 in the UK I think – and I think the UK was one of the largest markets outside of France for it.

How Many Left? figure is 3400 for 1994 and by then some will already have been scrapped.

About 3% survival then.

Which is good when compared to less than 1% of all BXs now surviving.

And unlike such rare cars as the Peel P50 where survival has, err, reached about 200%. Darned clever since we have records of some of the cars scrapping 8). Be a while before that becomes a prob with BX.
