Time to change timing belt. Water pump too ?

Post by chris40 »

Hi.
I've not found the answer in another thread, sorry if it was there.
I have to change my timing belt on my 19tzs.
Last one was done few years ago but i do not know when (with the last owner and without date, just km, 101000).
Now 108000km and minimum 3years after with me and long months no driving.
I wondered if it have too change the probably original water pump because many people tell me that the mileage is not high and the old pumps are more robust than the news with often a lot of plastic.
What do you think about this and if i must change this pump or just the gasket maybe ?
Thx

Chris.

Hi, personally would always change the water pump when doing the timing belt.

Had a bad experience with not doing so on an old car, not a BX. Changed the timing belt, as we do on all our cars upon purchase, regardless of age. Experienced intermittent squealing and it was mis-diagnosed as my fan belt being perhaps a little loose, even though that was new as well. to cut a long story short, 18 months later noticed steam escaping under the bonnet and discovered my head gasket had blown, then realised it was the water pump warning me that the squealing meant it was on the point of siezing, which it did.

Cubed the car with only 53k on the clock.

i usually look up from underneath at the water pump and if there is signs of fur build up under the sprocket this means the spindle seral is leaking, so pump failure wont be far behind,

its not usually the mating face gasket that fails

although saying all that, the price of a new pump is only around £24 quid from GSF, so its false economy not to fit a new one whilst your in there,

i find the budget one for GSF has the metal impeller, were as the premium one has the plastic impeller,

Change it if history is unknown, also change the timing belt tensioner, if you dont you know wot will happen. At least then you have peace of mind for 40k. I tend to stick with Q&H water pumps as ive had no trouble with them but change them every other belt change regardless. Avoid any pumps sub £20 as some are poor quality. Gates belt kits c/w tensioner are pretty good and quite sensibly priced.

First thing i do when I buy a car is change the belt and waterpump as a precaution, the red xantia auto was done this week!

Don't take a chance, it can make the car uneconomical to repair if it snaps.

Also waterpump a can seize aswell as leak. A bxc member had one do that recently and it ruined the head when it went and stripped te cambelt.

It's not price problem.
I just want to do things as good as i can.
I ll change complete kit with tensioner and water pump.
I have not technic manual about gazoline with my last diesel engines but i think it's esay to find some chapters about timing belt in pdf.
Need i special tool or homemade one for having an easier access to the differents parts ?

if you mean special tools for locking/pegging the cam and crank, there is no need to purchase the special tools, as all you need for the XU petrol engine is one bolt to lock the cam sprocket and another for the crank pully,

as on the petrol engines you dont lock the crank at the flywheel but at the crank pulley end
