XUD Turbo Oil Cooler Help!

Post by Ian_Fearn »

Its been a while since I've been on here but I need your HELP!!

I've got a Talbot Express camper with the 1.9 XUD Turbo. Its been leaking oil and following removal of the oil filter I found out why.....

The casting on the block where the long reach oil cooler nut goes into the block has broken hence its not possible to tighten the cooler to the block.

Anybody else ever had this issue?? Any ideas??

hi Ian

if its the threaded tube that the filter screws onto that has fractured/sheared off, they are still available from citroen, and depends on the depth/thickness of the oil cooler to which one you require

here is part No. and thickness of the two listed for the BX diesel

1103 E1
OIL FILTER INSERT
LONG 79,5

1103 C6
LONG 70
EXCEPT ANTIPOL EGR

and price and part No.

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
00001103C6 OIL FILT INSERT 7.08 GBP 8.50 GBP 8.50 GBP

00001103E1 OIL FILT INSERT 15.21 GBP 18.25 GBP 18.25 GBP

and here is the thickness of both the oil coolers listed again for a diesel BX

1103 A9
ENGINE OIL-WATER DISTRIB CHAMB
EP=56,6

1103 C9
NFP
EP=47,6

I wish it were that simple. Its the actual block casting that's gone. Where the threaded oil filter tube screws into.

I've done some research into welding cast iron. Given my relative lack of options i've got little to lose so i'll have a bash at it tonight.

Alternatively, I need a replacement engine. Any ideas where I could buy a recon engine off the shelf? Need it quickly.

I had a cast-iron part welded years ago and it immediately separated again under very light load. The same piece was then repaired again by brazing and this was successful.

(However, past successes do not guarantee future results. ;-))

Will a Helicoil not rescue it?

cast iron welding is good if it is done properly,

Helicoil won't help here as the whole boss has departed from the block. I'll take some pics when its on the bench.

My welding attempt proved fruitless, access and getting it clean enough just wasn't happening so I rang around a load of people breaking XUD Turbo vehicles and came up trumps with a chap nearby with one in a 306 that I could see and hear running. He'll remove it tomorrow and deliver it for £175.

There's gonna be a raft of differences between the two engines but I'm hoping there's nothing insurmountable.

Perhaps you may be able to repair the original engine when you've got time?

I doubt it very much. Welding cast iron isn't really practical so some kind of cold stitching would be required and cost more than a replacement block.

I got the Talbot engine out last night the the new engine was delivered. Plenty of differences at first glance so its going to be a 'fun' weekend.
