End of the road ?

Post by electrokid »

There are too many things that need fixing for this year's MOT so it looks as though it's bean tin time unless anyone wants a project and makes me an offer I can't refuse. I'm tempted to keep it as a project myself but I have too many projects already so the chances of any work actually getting done on the car is fairly remote. I might park it up and sell the decent spares from it - stst exhaust, 80 amp alternator, set of refurbished wheels with snow tyres, even a glove box lid with brass hinges etc etc.

I hope to be at the X rally if anyone wants to chat about ti. MOT runs out on the 11th of May but I hope to get the next car just before the end of April to get the tax refund for the BX and tax the new one starting May the 1st. At the moment of course if anyone is interested in taking it on then it can be driven to wherever.

Ideally looking for a Xantia estate preferably with the 110bhp lump but the 90bhp would do.

Yes I noticed that Kev - unfortunately you were a day too late posting it. I would have been very interested having taken several /xantia estates for test drives but finding work-needing-to-be-done wasn't really compatible with the price they were selling for: your's would have been fine.

The MOT on the BX runs out on the 11-5-2015 but I needed to declare it SORN on the 30th and tax a-n-other on the 1/5 to make the best of VED rebate etc which meant buying before the 30th - so I found the C5 (see signature) and bought it on the 29th otherwise I would have bitten your hand off for the Xantia. Hope someone else grabs it - it's a good solid alternative to the BX though nothing I've driven really comes that close. Drove some things which use those metal spring things - damn they were bouncy !

I need to deal with the BX - might sell the good bits because there didn't seem to be any interest here - but I also need to get the concrete laid in front of the workshop then I'll have room for a project - possibly a Xantia - but that won't happen until the autumn at the earliest.

Ah well, never mind - at least you found a suitable replacement. The hassle factor of getting the Xant back to UK probably makes it a no-starter anyway, but I thought it was worth a punt. Need to shift it one way or the other soon though as another tractor and a 2CV might be on their way here....

Need a roofrack/bicycle carrier? My uncle had a C5 and I sourced him a specific roofrack with two bike carrier attachments, which he never fitted and then he sold the car... They're still in original packaging, near Swindon.

'Tis a shame indeed Tim. (BTW congratulations on the name change and all that goes with that =D> ) Thanks for the invite to stick around - will do Sir - it doesn't matter how good the Xantias or C5s are - they aren't BXs - I think the BX is possibly the very best combination of the smooth ride and responsive handling - while looking around for a replacement, the BX was still top of the list but good-condition + within-my-budget wasn't going to be practical. She only made 228K - but it's been my daily driver since March 2006 when it only had 170K on the clock so no complaints at all.

Thanks for the offer Kev - not sure if the state of my hips would allow me to mount a bicycle these days  and I think the cross members / roof rack I had for the BX should fit the rails of the C5 ok. The only problem I ever had with that was not being able to find the *$*$*$ allen key when I needed to use it #-o

Cheers Brian, married life seems to suit, most members of this club have owned more than one BX (me more than most) and gone through periods of being BX'less (some for too long Mick! ) so its the member not the car, hope to see you and the C5 at some rallies.

Thanks

I would have made it to the X rally but there's a suspension ball joint that is dry and creaking: last time I had one of those (on a Metro) it finally jammed solid and snapped leaving the front wheels pointing in different directions  not a good idea !

How are you finding the C5, i quite like mine now, i wasn't sure at 1st, but its soo refined in comparison to the BX & has A/C which i must admit i do like. And the boot is massive as well, i can fit loads of crap in it, especially with the family now :)

Hi Matthew - how's it hanging :)

I was looking for a description for the C5 - you put your finger on it ok - 'refined' now I know what I don't like about it  Well the jury is still out - it's high mileage at 160K (it had to be to be within my budget !) and there are some wrinkles like airbag warning message that need to be sorted. My local long-term trusted garage does a major service for it for £260 but the good news is that the service interval is longer than the 2 years recommended minimum so that's not too bad since I only do about 4K a year these days.

I didn't get the driver's handbook with it so I don't know what all the buttons on the dash do (bought one on eBay). I was hoping that the Haynes book bought on Sunday would have given me a hint but no. In fact I was so disgusted with the Haynes that I emailed them to let them know. There was no mention of Lexia at all - and the one job I know needs doing - replacing the tailgate rams was simply sidestepped by saying it needs patience and dexterity so take it to a garage ! ! !

It's nearly as wide and long and the Granada estates I used to drive but without the visibility so I'm still learning how to reverse it. If it all hangs together ok then I could well turn up at Stratty on the Sunday with many boxes of BX spare :D I think the 'refined' bit gets in the way of 'being at one with the car' - once I get used to that it should be fine. Of course it feels as though it should be a wimp at handling but those of us who are long time fans of hydraulic suspension know differently of course - I have pushed it 'slightly' round one corner and was duly impressed by how unbothered it was - definitely hope for it then :D

Take care.

I might be interested in your glovebox lid with brass hinges if it is still available? It sounds a bit more robust than my broken plastic one.

Hi Crossbow and welcome to BXClub :)

I'm not stripping it yet because it might get sold or it might be a project for me, but the brass hinge mod is reasonably easy to do.

I used flush hinges...

http://www.technologystudent.com/joints/hinge1.htm

with the 'outer' part attached to the car and the 'inner' part attached to the glovebox lid. I used a Dremel to accurately carve out the area of the glovebox where the hinges attach so that it was an interference fit. I used very small screws so that they didn't show on the outside of the glovebox lid but also glued them in place using an excellent metal loaded epoxy...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plastic-Paddi ... 1c456217d7

and covered the screw heads with more epoxy to prevent any possibility of the screws moving since they are only screwed into relatively soft plastic.

Thanks for that, I'll go and have a sniff around my local hardware shop and find something discreet to do the job with and good luck with the car.
