Ignition switch

Post by HZman »

Looking for ignition switch for 1992 BX TZD estate. Key became difficult to remove, then it wouldn't turn, now it goes in and out alright but is solid and won't turn at all. Now comes out alright but won't turn at all. Steering lock doesn't activate when the wheel is turned.

Haven't located a Citroen part yet or scrapyard one. Any ideas/

I got mine from ebay from Poland £25 inc (delivered within 4 days) seems reasonable quality and fitted straight in with no probs, its easy to remove the old one easier still if you can get the switch in position 1 then the little tab pushes in and the lock should slide out, if you want o/e fitment they are quite pricey £100ish, the connectors are down behind the centre console behind the radio.

Great, thanks for the info and the tips on fitting. I have only got one quote so far for £120 + postage + Paypal fee in UK so have ordered the Polish one - £25 and free postage would seem to be a better deal!

Hi Matthew, E-bay LINK , but before anyone else buys one ?

Is there anyone off the forum who's bought one (and received it) could confirm if the keys are the same style and blade length as the Citroen type or as in the picture (Which may be just a generic/guide), as they look more like those used on Pug's which have a shorter blade and a square plastic head ?

Yes, well spotted. Sorry about that. I must pay more attention! - but it got you there!
As regards to the mulley post - yes, the first reply to my post indicates that someone has bought one and fitted it and is satisfied with it, which is why I bought one! When I get mine next week and fit it I will post whether it moves the car or not - no idea how long it will last but I believe, from a retired BX mechanic, they were quite high turnover items anyway - possibly why they are in short supply now. I believe that Valeo stopped making them in 2005.
My stepson buys and restores DS's for a living and has done so for many years. The basket cases go to Poland for refurb - as his mechanic is Polish and his father has a garage in Poland. It is considerably cheaper to drive them there for restoration and fly back, then fly out and drive them back, than to restore them here. Hence I have some faith in Polish bits - however, we shall see!!

The key is of a different type but is supplied with 2 keys, does it really matter? In my case not. Its functional and does the job, personally i think Chevronics @ £120 was a bit too steep but its down to preference on o/e parts. Prob wont last as long as the original (25yrs) but will prob outlast the car. The link from rxbx is the one a brought. The wiring on the connectors is a bit different with the middle two wires on one plug missing but did the job nonetheless.

Very tardy, I promised to report on the installed ignition switch some time ago.
The old one had 4 wires per side to 2 terminal blocks plus a short spur from one to a single female block.
The new one has 4 wires one side and 2 wires the other side - no spur.
On connection everything lit up and it fired up but the abs light stayed on and there was a spare male block floating about under the dash.
On snipping off the spur from the old one, re-attaching it to the new one and plugging in the floating male jobbie everything works as it used to.
The keys are quite small and seem harder to turn than the old big Citroen one but it is new and one of those plastic fob things that slides over the end makes it almost normal.
In my opinion a good £25 worth.
