GTi Auto

Post by Philip Chidlow »

On eBay. Apologies all round if this has been highlighted elsewhere.

Look at the positives obviously (rarity, general cosmetic condition, low mileage apparently and not least the fact the GTi auto is a lovely drive), but also the negatives (battery drain, battle scars, lack of history). OK, 6 mnths MOT but in my BX-experience an MOT no longer relates to the true condition of the car. Cambelt should be done, and there will be more work; it's an old car after all! So that, on balance makes the car expensive - even with today's improved values. If I was trying to sell a BX (or any car!) for that sort of money I'd hoover it out at least. ;)

Nice looking car in silver, nice miles but a little too strong at that money, which is 16v territory.

£1800 is more the price I would think.

Oooh! Seems a bit dear. A mate might be in on such a car, but at half the money.

Far too pricey £2800 for an unknown quantity, will prob need a fair few £'s spent to bring it up to speed, sounds like someone tryin to make a quick buck, bet it dont come with a warranty.
Tim, £1800? I think £995 a gamble at that.

Its not far from me, been thinking of going to have a look but at £2800 it needs to have a few show trophy's on the back seat.

I'd also say around £1000 is realistic, but unless somebody on here can look at it we're only speculating. And as Phil said give it a proper clean!

As for the battery drain, I'd be happy to get three weeks! I can only think that it is the clock or the alarm on mine.

Lovely car but 2.8k isn't going to happen. Maybe 15 if it was cleaner but no one seems to have pointed out that the osr wheel spat is twatted; that's a few hundred quid before you even get started on the mechanicals - and there'll probably be lots to sort out.

I have been to see the car this afternoon so can report back, I'll just list my findings and you can draw your own conclusions.

It was a genuine viewing as an auto GTI would get a good home here.

Plus points
1) Low mileage
2) Alloys and tyres in decent condition
3) Interior OK though bolster on drivers seat base has partial sunk
4) Some service history
5) No LHM leaks immediately evident.
6) Rises and falls smoothly and accumulator OK
7) Spheres OK
8) Doors OK
9) Engine starts and idles fine

Minus points
1) OSR door dented running into spat
2) Paint badly faded in the roof
3) Paint on the spoiler total mess, pealing off on the corners.
4) OS A post corroded around top hinge
5) NS A post starting to corrode
6) Has had sill repairs both sides and sills have been brush painted with paint extending into the lower part of the door recess
7) OSR inner wheel arch has golf ball size hole in the usual place
8) NSR inner wheel arch has tennis ball size hole in the usual place
9) Corrosion in the panel joins in the NSF lower door recess.
10) Both NSF and OSF inner wheel arches corroded at the strut mounts
After seeing all of this I didn't bother to take it out for a drive. The chap said he has had offers of £1500 unseen, I said he should take the next one of them as I was prepared to offer what I thought was an exceedingly generous £800. Needless to say I still have the £800!

The chap owns a VW customising and body shop business and In my opinion (and it is only my opinion) is waiting for the "rite person".

I think he was foolish not to have your hand off at £800!

As a matter of interest is the "automatic" badge on the boot standard? Don't have one on mine.

Well, you can't blame the guy for trying. He probably had no idea what the going rates are for BXs and at least he realised it was something special to have stuck such a daft price on it. If you could pick it up for 5 or 6 hundred quid and could do the work yourself, or know someone that could do it for you at a reasonable price, it'd be a nice project car. Apart from the 4x4 a Gti auto is, from a practical point of view, probably the worst BX you could buy, but if you want a really rewarding drive, probably the best. If I had a few bob and drive space I'd definitely have one of those.

Sounds like its an ok one comensurate with the age it is, but clearly not £2.8k's worth. I personally think £800 was a pretty good offer bearing in mind the issues you've spotted, he should have taken the deal. If someone wants to buy it unseen for £1.5k, he should snap their arm off :)

Thanks, Tim thought the badge looked rather older than the car.
