I was never away, always been lurking, just not making progress on the 16vs ;)

Yes definitely stock, or very nearly. My aim here is to try and prove I can actually do something with all these projects I have around the place. So keep it stock, do it one bit at a time. Once done, pootle it around for a bit and then sell it to some happy owner and get on with one of the 16vs.

I've had a quick look over it and first impressions are:

GOOD STUFF

Bodywork generally in good nick, scrapes and scratches here but no major dings/dents apart from one of the front wings which I think I'll have to do properly to stop the rust setting in.
Pain generally good as well, though with some fading on the plastic panels, but I don't think I'm going to try and remedy this; it'll never be concours and it gives it some character (in a good way, I think).

BAD STUFF

About half an inch of clutch travel, which I'm hoping is down to bad adjustment rather than the clutch itself.
Not very happy idling, but I'm not going to worry about this until it's had plugs, filters, belts, fresh fluids and fresh fuel.
Doubtless many electrical gremlins waiting to be discovered.
Inner wing rust. BUM, I was really hoping to avoid this. Welding ahoy, I fear.
174k on the clock. In fact it's in surprisingly good cosmetic condition considering the mileage!

Jobs in order so far are:

Carry on with the inspection
Give it a thorough clean to aid motivation
Fit some 16v Speedlines
Fit a nice period correct Blaupunkt stereo
Redo the exhaust

Then the first major job is going to be those inner wings. As soon as I've sorted the inner wings it'll be off for an MOT to see what it fails on. If anything! Haha!!!!!!

#-o

It will suit the colour, and of course its your car, just you never see a early GTi with trims on anymore.

I have the trims but they're not in great nick, and I always think that wheels make or break the look of a car, but I'm happy to take second opinions :)

I'll try and take pics with both options and see what people think, though I must admit I'm keen on the alloys.

Have a third - I don't like 6J's on anything other than a valver. Looks too beach buggy-ish

Same here... My TD wears 185/60s on 6js and looks just dandy :)

Not sure if the tyres I have on my set of 6js are 185 or 195. Further bulletins as events warrant :)
