Mk1 1600 subframes

Post by Kitch »

So are XU-based mk1 subframes any different to later subframes? I know there's a member running fore to aft, but I could put captive nuts for this in a mk2 frame.

Got the TRS up on the ramp and the subframe is toast :( Only done 17k miles, it's sitting near the beach in Swansea that's done it, LHM spill or no LHM spill

MK1 subframes use bearings at the wishbone.
MK2 use rubber mounts.

You can mount the front rear mount, you will need this for the pump HP pipe run.

The wishbones are also a different size so if you get a different subframe make sure you get the A-frames as well.

Hmmm, I forgot about the bearings/bushes. Think I might try and fix the original then. Mk1 subframes are probably few and far between!

Cheers

According to the Haynes, Mk2 type bushes are retrofittable to a mk 1 subframe. I'd guess you need the later 16mm wishbone bolts (as opposed to 14mms'). Can't really see why there would be any other majpr difference.
Local good guy mech/tech said Mk2 type is much more durable as the needle rollers used to get grit in and wear unevenly. Not sure about wishbones.

He may know more - try Nick at Surrey Auto Services based in Oakhanger - googly for contact number.

Not all Mk1s had roller bearings, some had the later type bushes, better idea

As above regarding the 2 types of MK1's, my understanding is the roller bearing models are more floaty & softer riding.

Mine's about as early as mk1 RHD models get, so guessing I've got bearings. You know I never even checked!
