Front Hydraulic Pipe

Post by saintjamesy89 »

Hi all,

I am looking for the suspension pipe that goes from the accumulator, under the engine (sits on the MK1 under engine cross member). not sure where it goes, but it forms a coil just infront of the accumulator sphere before heading behind the engine. If I can get this pipe changed, then at least I can run the engine without LHM pissing everywhere!

On a related note, how simple is it to change hydraulic pipes? My mechanic said most of the rears need doing, apparently it's easiest to drop the rear subframe to get access to them - sounds daunting to me.

Thanks.

Try Pleaides Tom. They'll probably have them in stock. Dropping the rear subframe one side at a time would probably be the easiest way to re-do the pipes. A half decent garage shouldn't have a problem doing it. Drop it off at the Westons.

Lets face it all pipes are pigs to change and ultimately if you plan on keeping your bx you will eventually end up changing/replacing/repairing a majority of the hyd pipes as they are all getting to that age now of self destruction, some being more challenging than others with the main problems being rusted/seized fittings.

I'd say bite the bullet and drop the rear subframe out completely. Makes access a LOT easier, and you get the opportunity to properly de-rust and protect the forward subframe mounting, which is very prone to rust, and which can result in the death of an otherwise good car.

Agree with KevR and Kitch, the rear subframe mount at the forward end is prone to rust. Had mine chopped and welded last year, and the front rear pipes done as one burst a couple of days after reassembly. Saved the car, at least for now, though she'll need a bit more remedial work yet.
