AUTOMATIC Gearbox Replacement BX 1905cc Diesel

I'm debating whether to replace the automatic gearbox on a 'H' plate BX Diesel 1905cc which is completely goosed.

Does the replacement gearbox need to come out of another BX Diesel or is the gearbox used in the petrol version exactly the same?

Also, can I use a gearbox from say a Citroen ZX or Peugeot 306 which I'm lead to believe used the same engine.

It is my understanding that the gearbox code is 'ZF 4HP14'. Is that correct?

Any help or advice would be welcome and appreciated?

Pretty sure you will need a box from a diesel bx or pug205/309/405 due to the gearing Good luck finding one. Converting to manual is another option. Not sure on the 306/zx fitment.

Yes it is a 'ZF 4HP14' and I was pretty sure they were the same box in the petrol and diesel.

To the original question - I too have a n/a diesel auto. It's kind of for sale but I haven't tried very hard and it's useful when when of our other BX's needs work!

It's box does work but flares in low gear when hot if you try to kick down - other than that it's a nice drive - I'd toyed with the idea of a manual conversion but hadn't got around to it..
While it's supposed to be a fairly strong box it's not uncommon for these to not work correctly. Often down to incorrect Dextron III being used instead of II fluid.
A few other cars used the same box - Rover 800 and a Daewoo I think but they probably had different ratios... There is an original workshop manual PDF floating around the net that's useful for the finer details... I'm sure it can be repaired but it'll not be cheap I expect. Apart from city driving I don't like the auto in the diesel.

I had a quote of £500 to rebuild my Tgd (catastrophic internal failure) auto box, thats why i converted it to manual, i dont think the auto boxes are any where near as robust as the engines, i had a 309 auto some years ago and that never changed up smoothly and on cold mornings would take some time to go into second gear and sometimes would not kick down from 4th even after a flush/oil change. I would imagine parts for auto boxes quite hard to find and pricey to boot.

I'm sure I've seen comments about Dexron III before, but can anyone tell me what the problem is? I'm just wondering now what ATF has recently gone into my gearbox...

Gasoline 1.9 has different final gear ratio than 1.6. I'm not sure if 1.6 has the same as diesel, but at least it fits and drives quite OK on a N/A diesel. If you change a box from petrol, be sure to use the original torque converter from your diesel as it has different (lower) engaging speed.

If you're looking for a workshop manual that covers automatic gearbox, Russek pocket mechanic is the only one to go, it has some information of the box included.

I've heard of automatic petrol bxs do huge mileages, my xantia has the same box and is on 108k and drives perfectly, Phil C had a GTi auto done 225k when it was scrapped and not due to autobox failure.
