Changing speedo (odometer) readings

Yes, I know, but I have a legitimate reason....
I'm about to add GTi instruments to one of the TZDs so I can see proper temperature and pressure info instead of relying on pointless warning lights.

The new clocks have a km/h speedo, which suits me fine as the car's now registered in France so km/h is more useful.

Howver I'd like to alter the new clocks to reflect the original mileage (211,000 and counting).
Anyone know if it's possible to do this without buggering up the mechanism...?

I am not sure if it would work as one would be in miles, and the other would be in kilometers, so there must be a mechanical difference in the back of the clock to make the numbers turn faster/ slower for kilometers or miles.

Just let us know the outcome as it would be interesting to know what the difference might be.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear - yes, there'll be a gearing difference. I'll be changing the whole speedo, so it will read in km for both speed and distance. I want to change the reading on the new km odometer to carry on where the old mph clocks left off. So converting 212,000 miles will mean changing the new odo to 340-odd thousand km.

I just connected a drill to the back of the speedo head on the bench running at a fair speed, checked how far it had turned in half hour, calculated approximate time and came back about 7 hours later to watch it turn the last 50k.

Final reading was 000002, all lined up perfectly. Was supposed to go in the rebuilt valver.

Might not fit this speedo after all - turning the drive from the back of the unit, it's very notchy, so I expect it's not long for this world. So might stick with mph speedo after all. Still want to fit the oil/water gauges though.
I've now acquired two sets of GTi gauges and one set of (AFAIK) NA diesel ones. Planning to make up a hybrid set for the grey TZD using the large dash clock from the NA diesel gauges, since the rev counter's never worked on the grey one and I don't need it anyway!
Need to get myself some senders before going any further. Can anyone tell me where the oil temp sender sits on the sump on the GTi? I know I can screw it into the sump plug thread, but I drive down some pretty gnarly farm tracks so that's a recipe for ripping it off on on a rock or tree root. Was planning to get a suitable boss and weld/braze it into place as per original.

One those tasks that is actually quite simple just made more difficult by the ones that want it to be that way. The BX speedometer drums are quite easy to realign just needs a bit of patience. Using a drill has its drawbacks and can damage the mechanism. I know I had to fix one that had been tampered with.
