I'd put money on it being a fault in the cable, usually where it bends round the rear axle and ARB. If the sensor is rusted in place, don't worry: simply leave it in place and dig out your soldering iron. Splice in a new bit of coaxial cable - aerial cable will do - between there and the connector under the rear seat and bingo, MoT pass and working ABS :D

Hopefully, I'll have a better idea over the weekend. Alas soldering won't really be an option as I have to work on the (narrow!) street, which is partly why I put out my initial appeal for help as it's a difficult working environment, for someone with inadequate tools (!) and little mechanical competence... So long as the weather is reasonable I'll make some sort of progress.

If you have a good replacement sensor, why not give Medway citroen a call and let them fit it for you? at least I think that's what they were called, they used to come on here quite a bit.

No not yet... I live on a narrowish street and unfortunately there is only one place near me without a curb so I can safely jack the car. I had to wait nearly two weeks for the Audi 80 parked there to move and only got the BX there on Sunday evening.

The week before I nearly took the chance of jacking the car on a double yellow line where there is a dropped curve. Good job I didn't as some kids torched a Fiesta down the alley opposite and the fire hydrant would have been under the BX!

As it was a mild, dry day and as I was, amazingly, hangover free from yesterday's work Christmas part I thought I'd give it a go. What will be obvious from the following was that I didn't heed some of the good advice above...

My first problem was removing the bolt that holds the sensor in place and I must have tried about 6 10mm sockets but none seemed to fit. So I removed the metal plate that protects the back of the brakes which fits inside the inner rim of the wheel to help improve access. I was just about to call it a day when I managed to get a socket to fit and turn the bolt. That was the easy part! The plastic sensor case goes through the arm and of course didn't want to move, then it broke now making it rather easier to remove. I suspect that first removing the hub and brake disc might make removing the sensor a little easier if one were able to push it through. Interestingly inside the casing there is a plug between the wire and the sensor itself, although I'm not sure if one could easily open the plastic case to access it.

All the time I was doing this I was thinking about my spare sensor and there was a nagging feeling that something was wrong and that there were differences between the spare and the one on the car I was busydestroying. Could it be that the one removed from a G-reg GTI was different from my later car? You guessed it I was now trying to fit a front sensor to the rear and it wouldn't fit. Tools thrown out of pram at that point, not least because a scratched lens on my new glasses will probably cost more to replace than a garage would have charged to do the work for me.

Does anyone have a spare rear sensor please?

Oh dear. An expensive way to learn to follow the hints and tips of those who have done the job before successfully.
I might have a usable spare but I am away for a couple of months.
These things are impossible to source new these days.
I wonder if Rob Moss has a supply ??

Yes and no! We all learn the hard way sometime, but as the rear sensor was already broken and I unknowingly had the wrong replacement I was always going to need the expense of another sensor, just I didn't know. At least now it should be easy to fit the replacement.

Famous last words.

Thank goodness none of mine have ABS...it's enough to keep the std ones going. Oddly enough the tyre guy commented on the good state of my front brakes a few days ago, but they've only done a year (discs and pads).

Seems Chevronics would have customers for the ABS sensors, maybe Rob can get them remanufactured or an equivalent that fits. Must be some demand even in France + 16v boys and girls.

Well yes and no..... the sensor may well have been ok it is always best to just cut the lead near the sensor then measure its resistance, if it reads normally you can then solder on or even use a terminal block to connect some screen cable back to the seat connector.

N.B. You will need to use a round file to enlarge the locating hole on the hub to allow the replacement sensor to slide in easily without further damage.
