TZD fuel filter confusion

Post by andycadabra »

I'm currently suffering persistent stalling from my 17tzd (Lucas/Roto diesel), which is due to fuel blockage or air getting into the fuel line, and I've read the best place to start is replacing the fuel filter.

Euro car parts took my Reg number and were convinced this is the one I needed.

however the fuel filter housing sits on top of the thermostat housing and looks like this.

and the last time I changed the fuel filter it looked like this which is described in some listings as Bosch?

Haynes manual is equally confusing - plenty of photos but no explanation as to what they relate to - I've bought the one from Euro car parts on eBay but I can still cancel it tomorrow I think.

Any advice would be gratefully received

My 87 n/a TGD has the first one, my later TZD had the third one. The second one is the same link as the first.

thanks for the quick reply Defender - sorry about that cock-up on the copy and pasting front. the correct link is now shown. Was your Tzd Lucas/ roto-diesel system, and did it have a housing like the one in the 2nd link?

Yes, I'm afraid no 3 is the correct filter for that housing.

Yes, that's the later type of filter housing...

I think these have seals that can leak causing air ingress and fuel drain back over night. It's a good idea to change the filter first as it's cheap and easy to do!

When the main driveshaft seal was leaking on the Lucas pump it would stall at any opportunity but the leak was pretty obvious...

the website was down all last night, Defender, so couldn't reply, and have ordered one as in link 3. So, thanks, and also to themildbunch - just a bit puzzled that the 2nd link has a picture of the housing I have together with the other enclosed type filter with the holes in the top. GSF lists both types as being compatible with my car, yet the design of them is quite different!. Anyone know when this kind of filter housing was introduced? is it just a Lucas/roto diesel design?
My stalling problem is quite serious, often at mid revs, and just arrived overnight. It always restarts though. I'm awaiting some plastic tubing I bought on eBay to look for bubbles.

The filter in link 1 is actually much bigger than the other and is a canister type filter that is held up to a cast filter head by one central bolt that goes through the filter to a cast base. Link 2 is a little confusing as that particular version looks like a canister type but it is in fact a cartridge filter the same as the one in link 3 that fits inside a complete filter housing. They don't generally look like the green one in link 2 which will have an open base.
