Non BX XUD Turbo Question (cambelt slips off the pulleys)

Post by Ian_Fearn »

I've just changed the diesel pump on my XUD powered Talbot and replaced the cambelt at the same time. I've done tons of these in the past without problem.

When i put it back together again and before refitting the bottom crank pulley (the one that turns the alternator) I spun it over a few times at which point the cambelt virtually fell off the edge of the pulleys.

I've refitted the bottom pulley and its no longer pulling off the side but its clearly rubbing against the rear face of the bottom pulley. I guess it aint gonna last long like this.

Does anybody have experience of this?

I reckon its been rubbing for some time as theres plenty of evidence of rubbed belt in the lower belt cover.

Long time since we saw you on these parts!

Generally, if it tries to walk off the front of the pulleys, it's too tight. If it tries to head towards the engine, it's too loose.

Thanks for the reply Kitch. I do miss my BX!

Its walking away from the engine so maybe too tight? I'll try slackening it off a bit and see what happens. Doesn't seem especially tight though.

The XUDT has a spring loaded tensioner, in the past i've normally just let it do its thing and tighten using the twist through 90degrees rule as the overcheck.

If it's spring loaded, then yeah it shouldn't really be a problem. Odd!

That was my experiance just the once! many years ago we started the engine with new belt on and immediately the belt began to edge off the bottom pulley, so always refitted the pulley before attempting to start. Never had any problems. I assume it's normal.

Thanks for that response Ken.

I must admit i've always found belt rubbings in the lower covers when changing a belt. I've built it back up and ran it up to temperature and its not showing any sign of trying to come off. I'll leave it as it for now and check on it after after a bit of use. Its not like the belt is going to rub away in a few hundred miles.

Makes me think the pulley is acts as a belt guide.

Ken, have you ever found the belt tends to run naturally towards the left hand side of the top pulleys on the XUDTs? My BX (lucas pump), my initial Talbot engine (lucas) and the current 306 DTurbo (bosch) engine currently in the Talbot are the same.

I think they nearly always run to the left side

From memory the XUD bottom pulley is not flat at the back, but slightly dished outwards in the centre so the belt cannot rub against the pulley

Annoying problem. Have you fitted the belt to run in the correct direction ? Is there anything rubbing on it between the pump pulley and the crank pulley on the engine side ? Is the new pump or its pulley perhaps not aligned with crank pulley.

I have always marvelled on the fact that these belts whiz around at high speed yet stay absolutely on track.......usually.

I had one like this once and only resolved it by fitting another belt.

How old is your replacement pump? As I recall a worn pump makes the belt run too front. Had this problem with previous Lucas pump (run at least 220kMiles), the belt was still ok after 25kMiles when I changed to Bosch (unknown mileage) and took a little bit smoke from the exhaust..

Normally it is caused when one of the pulleys has some play in it, it causes the belt to 'wander off'. I have the same problem on mine, so I have just ordered a new timing belt kit. Check the tensioner, idler wheel and water pump. they are most likely to be causing it.

Hope that helps.

Yeah. Thought it would be hilarious.

Or, it's just something I've observed doing loads of timing belt changes.
