Valve clearances....

Quick question. I need to do the valve clearances on the grey one, but I've already got the timing belt etc off. Can't turn the cam with engine at TDC obviously, but as far as I remember if I turn the crank a quarter turn that should put the pistons halfway up the bores so I can safely turn the cam with a spanner to check all the clearances. Then put the crank back to TDC so I can fit the belt. s that right or did I dream it? It's 104,000 miles since I touched the valves so it;s all a bit hazy!

You don't need to have the engine at TDC to do the belt, the timing marks on the pulley are set with the engine in the safe position, not TDC. Or so it is on the 1.9 petrol and 16v anyway. On a SOHC XU you can rotate the camshaft with the block in the safe position, but you have to be careful on the 16v as sometimes the inlets can strike the exhausts!

Unless I'm dreaming all this up now lol!

Hmm, so why can't I turn the cam then....

If it was a valve against a piston, you'd still be able to rotate it in one direction. Just double checked, and the GT's pistons are in the safe position when the timing marks are aligned.

Thanks! Just realised the HP pump belt is still connected.... Perhaps that's the problem! Will check.

Tied to the computer with a story deadline this afternoon, but will try and get a look at it this evening. Been putting the whole job off for ages and now I remember why - I'd forgotten just what an utter bastard of a job it is working on the TD engines in a RHD BX... especially as the other thing I need to do is track down a water leak from somewhere up behind the engine, where there's zero access...

They're easier than a 16v, if that makes you feel any better!

Really? Remind me not to buy a 16V then! On the TD it's the turbo that really screws things up - bloocking access to hoses etc from behind the engine. Plus of course the lack of clearance at the timing belt end, but that's the same for all the later engines I suppose.

Well, I looked again. Seems the timing hole on the TD is indeed at TDC. Turned the crank 90 degrees and can now turn camshaft easily to check clearances.
