Finally got a BX! Needs to sort a few things...

Post by Richb »

Hi everyone,
Just got a BX finally. K reg TXD. Have found a few bits need doing so after a bit of help / ideas to fix. Ive had a good look around the forum and found some answers.
It failed MOT on rear arm bearings on both sides and a handbrake cable snapped. Not worried at all about those as plenty of advice on here.

Main worry to me is the height adjustment lever by the handbrake. It doesnt want to move.
I see its rods to the arb's. The question is, is this a common thong and is it something that should be an easy fix?

Drivers door glass bounces down when going up. Im guessing a replacement motor or regulator?

Fuel gauge doesnt work. Guessing i will have to go searching for electrical gremlins. Unless anyone can help with a common fault?

Fan control has been bypassed, is the heater resistor or the contol itself likely to be at fault? I know i will need to check, just wondering about best area to check first.

Other than a slightly dodgy repair to the nsr wheel arch which i will be doing properly before a respray, i cant see ant major body issues, other than the plastic spats seem to catch the rear doors. Im wondering if the spats have been replaced?

Do need some trim bits as well. Main ones being a door card for one of the back doors, steering column top cover and a wheel trim.
Also the rear badges. But dont know what TXD's should have on the boot!

If anyone can help with suggestions, ideas or hints on the above, please let me know. I do restore old Triumphs for a living so nothings beyond me. But its 22years since i last owned a BX

Height lever, it will need lubricatng, use WD40 or diesel on all it's points, once that's worked in, get some copper grease on them.
Drivers window, sounds like you need a new mechanism, age related common fault.
Fuel gauge, access is under the rear seat, maybe just crap connection or may need new float.
Heater blower, could be the control on dash or transistor in the heater duct itself under the windscreen scuttle.

All common BX issues, my mate is scrapping a couple of BXs soon now, He's in Wakefield so not far from you, find out what you want and see if he can help.
They think it's all over, it is now!

Thanks ken

Im getting a list together. Not that much considering the mileage and age.

Still looking for a mk1 if ges gone one. Even a basket case!

Just found the wires disconnected at the sender end and the fan control itself is done for.

Wakefield's only 25 mins away so would be good.

I know its a daft answer but dont forget to move height lever to the left before moving forward or back, if you are new to a bx its easy to forget.

Yeah. I remebered about moving it from the stops i can just about get it between te middle 2 positions. Can even get it to rise to the higher road position. But lever wont hold as i darent force it. Looks like a crawl on my back and the wd40 and copper grease treatment.

The heater control is 90% just the earth that has gone open circuit, the common fix is just to join the lighting circuit earth to the motor earth by linking terminals 2 & 3 together on the control board. There is also another modification to increase blower speed both explained in detail here:

Thans kevan. The fan speed dial spins around without resistance or any sort of feel to it. Im guessing its knackered there as well?
