Can't say I'm surprised Tim, it's going to be carb related. Still, least it's new now!

Carb rebuilt and fitted, new ignition amp, coil and rotor arm also fitted and it's no different.

Dizzy cap ordered.

Intermittent weak spark noticed when warm and plug out.

It's getting fuel, air and the timings fine so must be ignition?

Next stop is a new dizzy?

Unless there's more to this than I know, I genuinely can't think of anything else on that car that could cause the issue, other than the carb. Will it rev up while the auto-choke is in operation?

Yes, but today it reved up ok and ran for a while and was well up to temp and would respond to throttle input, then just died, and refused to restart, until it cooled, it restarted briefly but was popping and misfiring and then stopped again.

Doesn't make sense that it's anything ignition-related then, other than the amp. Are you certain the carb is ok? Who rebuilt it?

Got your text by the way, I do have a spare dizzy from a 1600. No idea how well it works, but assume they're the same as the 1900?

He said asides a bit of dirt the carb was in good order.

Did he strip the auto-choke unit? Or just the carb itself?

The dizzy just wouldn't behave like this if it failed. It would either work all the time, or play up all the time. It wouldn't be more likely to work when the autochoke is closed as it has no way of knowing what the carb is doing.

The auto choke had been off for a while when it died?

The plugs are wet and you can smell petrol though.

Weak and strong spark sounds like electrical. Im not that familiar with the petrol bx. But how does it pick up when to spark? Im guessing camshaft driven dizzy? Check the amplifier and all wiring. Have a double check of any wires that are none replacable as part of the ignition circuit. Incorrect coils do this kind of thing on the triumphs i work on.

Don't bother taking the plugs out to test them, get some plug testers or a timing gun, and test them while they're fitted. It's much harder for a plug to spark under compression than it is in the atmosphere, so you might find it's barely sparking at all. Dizzy doesn't generate the spark, it just distributes it, but then you've changed the things that generate the spark already, so it may be a wiring issue.

What still makes no sense at all, is why it'll run on cold-start fine, but only stop running once the choke opens again, and as soon as you touch the throttle pedal. Unless something's getting lost in translation here, or not getting conveyed over 'tinternet very well, I can't see how it's electrical.

Vid doesn't work for me, so can't give an opinion on the spark, but like I say, I'd test them fitted rather than in the open, as that's not the most accurate method in the world!

Actually the dizzy does 'know' what the carb is doing a bit, from the vacuum advance/retard pipe. However it may be that the initial spark from the dizzy itself is too low causing too low a voltage at the coil and ultimately plugs. It happens on outboards and motorcycles where the stator (primary ignition winding coils) breaks down with marginal heat.....
Worth checking your battery voltage is good and alternator output high enough.

I'm afraid I don't trust HT leads to last much more than 12-15k although they can be good for 50k. My old 1.4 taught me that, new leads every plug change or they would break down a few k later. First thing was slightly worse fuel consumption, then the odd miss, then rough running and bad starting. Caps I change religiously every 25-35k max along with arms. They just get too pitted for accurate sparking and fuel economy. I've not had a cracked one yet on a BX, but some pretty badly pitted contacts and corossion, including in the lead end socket.
Copper leads and NGK caps last longer by a mile than the carbon filled common leads btw.

As it happens I am in process of sorting a 2001 Mariner 25Hp with similar problems and the main suspects are stator and float needle and valve. Either can give similar symptoms. Been through pretty much all the rest, coil packs, replaced waxstat, stripped and cleaned carb (Keihan) including the 0.2mm or 0.15 holes in it... etc etc.
