Smokey Diesel
Smokey Diesel
Finally got the TXD Turbo Estate Car on the road today (see hydraulic failure thread)
One thing I could not miss was a cloud of black smoke under moderate acceleration, yea I kept my foot gentle once I saw that. Pulling away the black smoke kind of obvious.
Now the causes? Oil probably needs a change thats my first direction. However I know this was a transplanted engine with a overhauled Big end so is there anything I need to know about the pump? Diesels are not my field experience when they start doing this.

Re: Smokey Diesel
My t/d started to blow a lot of black smoke on acceleration as well as more than normal oil consumption, a turbo rebuild cured the problem. which turbo do you have kkk or garrett? rebuild kits are available for both, in my case there was a lot of play on the turbine shaft hence the oil being sucked thru and burnt up. not always the case could well be the fuel pump needing a seal or two.

Let me explain this was probably the first 5 kms of running this old girl has done in nearly 4 years since the engine was replaced and as a result of the failed suspension.
So not changed the Oil yet or put fresh diesel in. No idea what Turbo is on the car but one thing is the idea of a turbo rebuild how much one those in the UK to give me an idea?

Re: Smokey Diesel
There are 2 ways around it, you can buy a replacement cartridge at around £70 uk money or get a rebuild kit for £30/50, you should be able to track one down in NZ as they are common to VW, AUDI, and many other vehicles. Differenxes are the garrett has an adjustable boost valve with a diaphram and the kkk is all internal tho still adjustable.

Re: Smokey Diesel
You are assuming its the Turbo!
Couple people I have asked locally suggested as its been standing a while that a clean tank of diesel, Oil Change and replace the fuel filter may well cure the issue before looking at ripping apart the turbo.
At least I now have an idea of the cost, not as bad as I feared....I hope.

Well worth a try of fuel and filters, gotta be the easier and cheaper option, also check all the breather hoses are clear of any blockages.

Re: Smokey Diesel
Give it an italian tune up, the smoke should gradually lessen, unless there is a problem. Old diesels can potentially be a bit smokey, especially if the diesel pump has been played with. Does it seem to have plenty of urge when accelarating? personally i find lots of smoke puts off tailgaters

Re: Smokey Diesel
A good run and Injector cleaner could help as will a service before you start taking things apart.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....
Re: Smokey Diesel
Well she got serviced! As in Oil and Fuel filter cleaned. Plus 40 litres of fresh diesel in the tank and a dose of injector cleaner. Fuel filter not been replaced as the part I got was wrong. So I turned it upside down clean bit to the bottom for now.
Took it for a short run and yes Mulley the italian tune up was tried and commonsense prevailed given the big black cloud and the cop car coming the other way....typical.
As long as keep the revs below 3000rpm and smooth gear changes the cloud seems to be kept at bay. There is a nice hill to give it the ultimate test but before I go there best head for the legal paperwork first eg Number plates.

Re: Smokey Diesel
If everything else is ok then could well be the Boost Control Valve that's been played with. If they're adjusted for max power you'll always get loads of black smoke. On my white one, it always smoked badly on acceleration (but went like a rocket) - when I finally got round to stripping the BCV I found someone had removed (or possibly just lost - it's a sod of thing to work on unless you take the rad and all the fittings out of the car to improve access) the metal bit that the adjuster works on, so it was on maximum extra fuel as soon as the turbo kicked in....

Re: Smokey Diesel
Well dont need to worry about someone playing with the Boost valve now! The thing decided to leak and is now being replaced. When we can get a diaphragm for it.
The nearby hill that climbs 200 metres in just over a km did its usual find a fault for me. Better to find that now than later.

Re: Smokey Diesel
Be careful with the leaky boost pump diaphragm. Are you aware that the engine can run away from the turbo sucks in the leaking fuel?
My XM did this, but luckily I stopped it in a few seconds by stalling it. A major adrenalin rush (I was like an Olympian getting from the engine bay to the driver's seat!) but not something I would like to repeat.
If you have a manual you can stall as I did. If you have an automatic then I think you just call the fire brigade a run far away.

Re: Smokey Diesel
has the air filter been checked/changed? if it's been standing it could even have a mouse nest in the housing blocking it.

Re: Smokey Diesel
Sorry, took it that the boost valve leak was an additional fault that had developed.
