Battery Size
Battery Size
Anyone got any info on the Battery type and size recommended for the BX TZD Turbo? I cant find my notes to confirm minimum capacity. Dont want to put in the wrong type just because the auto store got it wrong again.

Re: Battery Size
When I got a battery for my tgd estate I remember the recommended battery size and rating being the same for both the turbo diesels and the 1.9's. I was told a 60 Ah would be fine (approx 240mm long) but as the battery tray in mine could accommodate a larger battery I went for a 74 Ah bosch S5 (probably a bit overkill!). It measures approx 270mm x 175mm and fits in my car no problem. It's been in since October last year and works great
Re: Battery Size
I too go for the biggest battery that the car will hold.
At one point I had a earth mover/ tractor battery on mine, but it didn't seem to turn over any faster when I came to start it.
Anything rated for a diesel engine should do the job.

Re: Battery Size
You want to buy as many cranking amps as possible. The capacity itself is not a problem unless you listen to radio alot or forget to turn the lights off when motor is not running. As you don't have a real winter there something like 500Amps (60Ah?) should be fine. I have 850Amps (74Ah AGM) so the diesels start even from -30C. I would also recommend renewing at least the earthing cable, from battery to gearbox and (originally from battery to chassis) daisy-chaining it to chassis as it is easier to do. The gearbox-chassis cable should be about 10 inch 16mm2 cable with lugs of 8mm and 6mm. From battery to gearbox I used 35mm2 ready-made cable with 8mm lug. Just dont remember the length but it is easy to measure.

Yup when I leave it up on the mountain and the temperature dont get above freezing for a few days! Thats not a real winterKaapelimies wrote: As you don't have a real winter there something like 500Amps (60Ah?) should be fine.
I take it Capacity would be be those numbers I have seen o the batteries I have.
500cca was the original TXDs battery now got a 580
This TZD has a 530CCA battery so this is the bit I want to clarify. It all comes down to cost more than anything else! Battery for European models are stupidly high and very wildly based on the CCA rating comparison between Jap motors and Euros.

Re: Battery Size
The more cold cranking amps you have, the better. But a healthy battery with 500 cca will be more than adequate for these diesel engines.
Re: Battery Size
Ok might gone for a bit of overkill!
Settled on a 670cca over a 500cca for the sake of extra nz$30 might as well give it umph!!! Oh and it confirmed the other fear...glow plugs need to be changed .

Re: Battery Size
You don't strictly need as powerful a battery as diesels because they have higher compression ratio load and power sapping glowplugs too.
I always put a bigger one in my petrol BX though to give me more available power for longer in the winter.
Your choice of course.

Re: Battery Size
I need to buy a battery anyway.
If I can put in a bigger one that would always be good. And for the difference in price, I might as well.
Thanks Jaba!
