Lhm choice / price

Post by Richb »

Ok this is one of those daft questions.....
Car looks like is due a hydraflush, going on mileage and there is no history of one being done. I know its had new pipes though so fluid will have been mostly swapped i guess.
The question is this. Am i better sticking to total branded stuff or is it cheapest rules? Not that there seems much in it for standard lhm.
Also is ebay about the cheapest place?
Ive seen hydra flush at £35 delivered on there.
Also am i looking at lhm or lhm plus?

I tend to stick with LHM plus 5 litre can which i get off ebay for about £20 free delivery. Not a bad deal as local motor factors is £8 a litre. Hydraflush is more expensive i assume thats for 5 litres?
When you do change the fluid ensure you bleed out all the brake lines fully as a flush wont get down that far.

Before trying to undo them soak them overnite with penetrating oil, they do have a nasty habit of breaking off moreso the front ones, use a decent fitting socket or they will round off, or alternatively a good pair of mole grips usually gets them out. Fit new bleed screws easy enough to get from a motor factors.

The bleed screws usually are not too bad. As /\ if you use a good high quality 6 point 8mm socket (if I remember right) they will shift. If they are a bit scabby just replace them. The pipe feed screws are the real sods to remove as a lot have been butchered by idiots not using good tools. In the case of these, cut the pipe tight to the feed screw end, and use a socket, crude and expensive but most times it works.

The other b****** screw is the 4mm diameter bolt through the rear calipers...

The front bleed valves i got from a factor have 10mm heads on them, makes for ease of undoing i always put a smear of copper grease on the threads to stop the sods from seizing and a bit of offcut rubber pipe packed with grease over the end if your rubber caps are missing.

You can only get LHM Plus, the old LHM is now non existant. I just use any that i can find, some are slightly different colours & total always looks a very bright green in colour, but they all perform the same.
