strange behavior

Post by citroen7 »

Over the past couple of weeks the red stop light has flickered on a few times , no problem i thought just top up the lhm, doesnt need any strange i thought as everything is working pretty well anyway monday coming home from kids football the back end would not come up at all ,however next morning up she came and of to work but now red light on after about 1 minute and stays on . raised her up to check level but no go so turned her off and came back later started car and up she came i thought may have to eat humble pie having said never had duff pump before so that night changed pump primed it but no joy so as i was unsure of that pumps history changed it again for the one of spare car that i new was working ,still would not come up moved the car up and down the drive and suddenly up she came great i thought problem solved . Next morning things still the same light on after a minute so read up on previous threads and other sites and last night dug out the box of spheres and found two accumulator ones ,first one nothing flat as a dodo so put no.2 on now had brakes but still not right
so as it stands start car ,car rises drive off red light on after a minute drive of to work fine but steering does feel a bit wooly , if you lower the car fine but she will not come back up but if you switch off and back on again up she comes .
Personally i think the fdv and pressure regulator need overhauled but cant help thinking the front height corrector comes into the equation.
Well theres your friday teaser any thoughts guys??

My first reaction would be to check the hose clips leading from the LHM tank to the pump. Do they still have the old non re-useable type hose clips on there? If so, trim the ends of the pipes and replace with proper jubillee clips as it may be sucking air there.
Next thing to check is the rods that set the height; not the ones on the sway bars but the ones that are adjustable that run from the lever inside the car and are attached to the rods that run front to rear of the car.
It sits in a slot and the correct dimension is I think from memory, 5mm from the front and 7mm from the rear of the slot. If set incorrectly, the rod for one end can sit against the end of the slot and prevent the H/C from operating until the car is shaken.
I had this problem on our TZi as a Cit specialist had been stuffing around with the adjustments for reasons best known to himself. When set, the problem disappeared and the ride improved out of sight.
It may be that the H/C needs a good clean out, but I'd investigate the two I've put forward before you embark on anything too involved within the system.
I take it the filters in the tank are clean and the HP side of the system has been properly bled via the brakes?

there is a lot that makes sense there alan, funnily enough my original pump had no clip on it at all it now has a jubilee clip on and i will change the other end later , i will also go for a lhm change and filter clean but i do have a problem with bleeding the brakes as from memory only 1 bleed nipple is servicable is bleeding the brakes that critical?

Air in the system will cause all manner of problems - and the pipe to the pump prom the reservoir must be in good condition with good ends. If air is getting in you may be able to see a green milky trail in the reservoir when the engine is running.

As the hose is under vacuum it lets air in but no LHM out - which makes fault finding more difficult. For diagnostic purposes it can be replaced with a clean bit of garden hose.

If you're lucky air will not have got into the limbs running to tha calipers - and a good bout of 'Citroebics' should clear the air out of the rest of the system as it circulates the LHM through the rest of the circuits.

well i replaced the hp hose which was indeed showing signs of cracking and double checked the filters which were imaculate and there is some improvement but still not right so i have ordered the kit to overhaul the flow diverter and while i was at it i ordered the strut overhaul kits to so plan is to rebuild spare struts and fdv during this week and go for change over on fri/sat i only do 10 miles a day so i dont think i am going to damage anything between now and then.
