Can never have too many bearings.

being a fiat panda 4x4 keeper, i have had HELL with finding the right gear box oil for my car. (it takes something called ZC 90 which works out as being SAE 80w/90 GL3.. which just is not made any more :( apperently any other oil will cause any yellow metals in the gearbox to just melt away)

i was told by a guy who worked for a company who made gearbox oil however that the modern stuff should be backwards compatible. meaning that modern GL5 stuff should be fine to use in an older gearbox. i still prefer to use the original recommended oil though. there's a chap on FiatForum with a fiat panda that has done crazy miles and he uses GL5 extreme pressure spec oil in his gearbox and it has been fine for the past 150k miles...

Much like Kitch, I've always just used "whatever" until I changed the Athenas gearbox the first time and filled that up with the proper stuff.

The difference was truly unremarkable, in fact, un-noticeable.

I've now reverted to "whatever" and still have no issues (except for the sloppy linkages that I need to find replacements for).
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I disagree. I notice an enormous difference on the very first drive after refilling with the correct oil. Unfortunately the difference was mostly that when I parked it up all the gearbox oil transferred itself messily to the floor via the driveshaft seal.... Turns out that when fitting the new driveshaft I'd forgotten to tighten the bolts holding the internediat bearing, so the shaft had wandered far enough to the outside so the seal couldn't work. Just as well the Total oil was still on offer at the supermarket... :0(
