Most bxs are diesels, carb models can be problematical unless set up properly, TZD turbo is probably a good choice. As mentioned get the best you can afford and go on structural more than mechanics or body.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Maybe the carb models are 'problematic' but the Solex is not too bad. The 1.6/1.9 should give 200-250k+ service. Diesel 500k+, though turbos tend to do the heads around 250k...afaik. Even the 1.4 will give 175-200k... and the manual choke models are the easiest to sort!. Maybe someone can give an expected life for a 16v but I'm sure if looked after it will still be pretty good - 200k+?, if revved hard from cold well, who knows, but same for anything really.Tim Leech wrote:Most bxs are diesels, carb models can be problematical unless set up properly, TZD turbo is probably a good choice. I know for a fact a 1.4 can make it to 244,259 miles. Seen plenty of 16Vs on 200k+.

Well if the kids hadn't cookd the head gasket on my old 14, maybe it would have seen that too....though I suspect the TU is better for a longer life...

Certainly all seem capable of relatively high mileages, my mk1 14re 150c engine 133k, mk1 16rs 199k, 1st t/d 170k, 2nd t/d scrapped @ 107k, 1.9d 215k, current t/d 292k, diesel longevity down to basic servicing regular oil/filter changes. Don't let higher mileages put you off too much as most diesel bx's will prob have clocked up a few hundred k's, with 4/500k's not uncommon for the early 1990's taxi's. Personally I would rather buy a bx that is rust free even if the engine was knackered, diesel engines/boxes are relatively easy to source and basic spannering to swap.

The solex in the GT now is perfect and starts and runs like a dream, goes to show if they are set up correctly and aren't clogged up there's nowt wrong with them.
I wonder if the bxs light weight has a bearing on its mileage wasting ability?

But the politicians tell me that new cars are light weight.....
Had someone proudly tell me their diesel Mini (2014) does about 60mpg, so informed them that it was the same in 1985 with a BX diesel...progress eh? doh!
