Another Suspension Issue

Post by kiwi »

That TZD Turbo Estate I have go back on the road has now thrown me another curious problem.

I have no visible leaks of green stuff anymore! Which is always a plus but since yesterday a new dilemma has started!

Suspension is slow to rise! Also have had a couple occasions the warning light come on mainly at low speed occasional while zipping along at 100kph and the steering feels sluggish.

Failure of the suspension most obvious the belt seems to be working the pump ok however yesterday just before all this started to happen I did not a screeching from the belt. I cant see anything obvious.

Tried citrobatics but that's also when I noted the slow to rise in fact incredibly slow. Several minutes can pass the front comes up the back follows along slowly. When I try the hold the foot brake down and wait for the back end to jump up I get nothing in fact if I pump the brake I kill the rear suspension. Probably the front as the steering also becomes heavy.

Thoughts?

Pump was replaced less 1000 miles ago! Granted second hand but was strong.

Was thinking accumulator sphere? I know couple my other BXs in the cooler weather are bit slow to rise at the rear?

Got me stumped again,

The light coming on indicates one thing only and that is low fluid level, has your level float got stuck showing it as full when it actually needs topping up?

Maybe the hyd pump belt is slipping, they need to be real tight. If it has that glazed look change it.

revisited the car today

Symptoms! The belt "seems" fine no slippage evident.

Front under does rise.

Rear End did not rise even after several minutes and citrobatics.

Noted from the brakes when depressing pedal a bit of crunching noise both sides.

No leaks evident.

Fluid level looks Ok! Cautious about over filling.

Two options Rear height corrector? She was pretty bouncy and that was the first part that sprung up after the suspension overhaul (not been touched other than that.) and second option the one I dont really want to visit unless due to space in the TZD! The brake valve.

Frustrating not having a mechanic nearby with knowledge.

another update!

Checked the pump its Fine! Replaced the belt! Threw caution to the wind and put in another litre LHM.

The back comes up eventually but after pumping the brakes a few times it loses rear pressure. Also on max height its not solid but still quite bouncy compared to the other BXs when I do the corner bounce test.

One observation (bearing in mind its a noisey diesel) I cant hear the Tick tick tick.

You shpuld still be able to hear the accumulator tick anything over 20 seconds is acceptable tho not ideal 45-60 is better, i can hear the tick on both my diesels, failing that have you got a stethoscope or long screwdriver or a long piece of pipe would work you should hear it through either of those. Even if the acc sphere is flat the back should still lift. i suspect the rear height corrector is faulty-is the linkage still in place? is the arm on the h/c moving as they can seize up? try bleeding out the rear end through the brake calipers bear in mind the rear brakes take some pressure from the rear spheres and work as a brake compensator dependant on load.

Sounds to me that the pressure regulator could be giving some trouble. If the pump is working but pressure isn't building up, that's the first place I'd look.

Whereabouts in NZ are you?

I am going with a faulty height corrector! Its the one I did not replace! Hard too describe why I suspect it due to it being the first part the BX to lift after overhaul at the from that included replacing the regulator.
This cars becoming a test of ones patience.
