Suspension help!

Post by Richb »

Have an issue with TXD no 2. The suspension rises well. Actually slightly quicker than TXD 1 (had to number as both k reg and same colour! ) but slightly quicker at the back than the front. The front creaks and groans and rises herkily. Which im guessing means a strip and lubricate job. Which isnt a problem.
The car then rises and falls to all of the height positions without issue.
The problem is (im assuminv its a problem!) is that i set it to highest position on fri and it didnt drop until i lowered the lever this morning.

Ive looked at the "sinking feeling" thread and cant see anything wrong apart from dark lhm. Ive checked hoses. And whimst they appear older than the ones on TXD1 they are all present and correct.
Not yet got my head around the suspension so suggestions welcome. It wont get sorted until TxD 1 is on the road, but if i know what to look for it means i can start searching.

The front end creaking and groaning whilst on the rise is fairly common, there is a hole in the top of the strut bellows spray some lube in there and it may resolve the issue. As for the rear end not dropping, surely thats ok if the lever is in max height position, this means your rear h/c is in good fettle with no leak back-which some have some dont, Both my bx's drop at the rear overnite due to the h/c's leaking back internally, so long as the car rises and falls accordingly with the position of the lever and reaches min to max on all 4 settings low/normal driving/service high/and full height then i dont think you have a prob.

on high setting the car should stay up until the lever is moved to a lower position.

In an ideal world, yes - in practice with year of wear on the struts/rear cylinders you find that they will sink over time. So if it finds its correct position using the lever, it suggests your hydraulics are in very good order :)

Usually the back drops over time-mine starts dropping when i fuel up, which i find odd as the front is much heavier and tends not to. Thats Citroenphysics for ya.

They tend to stay up more in the highest position as it is rarely used, therefore those parts of the hydraulic sealing surfaces see little wear.

My theory on why the back sinks first is that there is a leverage on the rear cylinders, so any slight sinkage on those is magnified as the wheel travel.
