Does my BX have ABS?

Post by BXcitro »

Just wondering if anyone knows when BX's started to have ABS?
My TZD was registered in Aug '91. I've noticed quite a few J & K plates have a ABS badge on the boot but mine hasn't so does that mean it hasn't got it?

To be honest I'd rather not have it as its one less thing to go wrong.

The only way to find out for certain is to loom under the bonnet and look for an abs pump/modulator. Or look at the driveshafts for toothed rings on the inside of the outer cv joint. There will also be a wire running from each wheel.

Much easier to get non abs bits like front flexys' too.... You won't be short of stopping power unless you have something really heavy on the back, like a large caravan or RIB!. Note the tow weight max is relatively low as the car is quite light. With good (preferably Bendix) front pads and discs the BX has enough braking power for most normal driving, you can lock them up in the dry if you want, but finding the maximum point is not too hard. Softish shoes help the feel, as does a well bled system with clean fluid.

Just look under the bonnet at the top of the LH inner wing for a contraption with 5 hydraulic pipes connected to it. Thats the ABS hydraulic control unit.

ABS is a safety feature, for me it is well worth it. I have even swapped the ABS off of a scrapper and fitted it to a TD I had. There are times in the wet when it has allowed me to stop instead of just skidding/sliding.

However it can be a mare to troubleshoot problems so it may be that you indeed are better off without it.

Just look for the badge on the tailgate, usually just to the right of the number plate.

If its a TZD Turbo it almost certainly will, but if it's a 19TZD then more likely it won't.

FYI, ABS flexies are readily available on eBay for as little as £13 each. LH6015, but you will have to go through the old dance of checking fitment in advance as both 8mm and 9mm hoses use that number and most sellers either can't be bbothered to list the specs of don't answer the simple question without checking their fitment guide (which is frequently wrong).

Oh, and am i the only one that thinks stamping on the brakes at 20mph it probably a surefire way to tell without loads of guesswork and technical stuff...

Only one of the five TZD turbos I've had was ABS - a very late estate. Personally I'd rather not have it - it's a pretty crude system IMHO. But each to their own.
