Wheels and tyres

Post by rutter123 »

Hopefully i will be getting a set of SMR (pug 205/309 1.9 gti) 15 inch alloys for the estate, i do like these and think they look great on bx's, which tyres would be the best fit? Bearing in mind they will be tight on the rear, i currently have 205 speedlines on the t/d with 185/60/14's, should i go down the same route and fit 185/60/15's, i dont want to go any lower on the profile and compromise the ride.

185/60R15 will be massive, way too big a rolling radius for the car. The best size for 15' I've found is 195/50R15. With 195 width, 45 profiles are too small, and 55's tend to rub on hatchbacks. 185/55R15 might be worth a look, but I can't guarantee anything.

I had 15's for a while, twice, and both times I ditched them due to the poor ride/sensitivity to tramlining.

195 55 15 work fine on 16Vs and are extremely close to the original 195 60 14s in size. The Green one came with 205 50 15s which fitted fine but were poor quality. Its difficult to get really good 205 50 15 tyres now. Excellent tyres are the Michelin CrossClimates which I find work really well in 195 55 15 – they are quiet and grippy with very progressive characteristics in the dry and wet. And you can get Michelin Cross Climates in 185 55 15 – they are only slightly larger in diameter than the tyres you already have. But take a look at the C5 'steel' wheels which are about half the weight of most aluminium wheels at a bit less than 5kg instead of nearly 10kg – that's a lot of unsprung weight saved… Conti tyres are grippy but the Contact 5s are noisy…

There really isn't much room in the estate rear arches. I found even standard GTi speedlines with (from memory) 195/50/14s would only just fit and were a pain to get on and off.

That's because the estate arches are mk1-size. They never enlarged them like they did on the hatchback.

On my van I run 195 55 15s fine and I think the van is the same as the estates…

The offset of the wheels will play the biggest factor. The standard 16v wheels are a bloody tight squeeze on an estate.
