Conversion Diesel to Petrol

Post by kiwi »

I got this nuts idea running through my head at the moment!

This TZD Estate I got has been driving me nuts with ongoing problems! The Suspension is the main one but also the smoke and an Oil leak is another!

Now the nuts idea is to transplant a petrol engine into the Diesel! I am waying up the cost of feasibility but the technical side might just have me stumped! Possible and what pitfulls in the process?

If you can't fix an oil leak there's not much point in considering an engine transplant!

You will most likely need the engine wiring loom as diesels are different to petrol models, fairly straightforward i would have thought but also consider clutch cables and operation can be different as well as exhaust downpipes and some of the hydraulic pump lines as diesels are mounted on top of the gearbox and petrols are mounted by the alternator. im sure there will be more bits to adapt, is it worth the hassle?

As I said nuts idea! Nearly as nuts as the Auto to manual conversion ;)

Something I was considering if this TZD estate becomes more of a drama with the oil burning, oil leak and suspension woes. Given I have more petrol Hydraulic pumps than diesel.

Nothing like a good 5 year plan!

Converting an auto to manual is considerably easier i would think, i did this on my old tgd of which its auto box had massive internal failure.

/\ I'm inclined to agree - it seems a drastic step to me...but isn't there some taxation down there which penalises diesels more than petrols? Plus spares availability may swing it?

Last part is what would swing it! I got two spare Hydraulic pumps and the way these suspension issues been plaguing me if the pump goes again this car is off the road permanent.

Economically the diesel still wins! Despite the crazy Road User pay for miles in advance charges but also Petrol is cheaper to tax annually.

As I said crazy idea that I may investigate at a future date. Be a shame to cull a rare estate car.

It all depends on how good you are at changing engines and If you have all the bits you need.

I did this just for a bit of fun and it took me weeks just to get it started. The actual wires are different for the two engines, although I managed to make an adaptor and make it work, then there is heater hoses, fuel hoses, gearboxes, the throttle cable, exhaust, clutch, drive shafts. Etc. some things can be mixed and matched to best suit the application you are using, but some things are specific and won't interchange.

Personally if you can, I would leave the diesel engine in, but if you want a wacky challenge then go for it.
