At worst you may want to swap the pulleys over as the 406 pulley is a little bigger, i never have you can usually get away with slackening off the adjuster enough to compensate and using the existing belt.

KevR I tried the banging trick with hammer and steel tube but no change. I've done that on starter motors before, but didn't think of it for an alternator.

Alternator arrived this morning, but it seems that Peugeot 406 alternators aren't all compatible after all - the 2 mounts at the bottom are too close together, and the 3rd needs to be on the top of the alternator in it's fitted position. From what I can see from pictures on eBay the one I bought seems to be for the HDI diesel. it was described as 1999 2004 PEUGEOT 406 2.0 8V 90 BHP ALTERNATOR REF CC140.
I have now located one from a 1995 Peugeot 306 turbo-diesel which looks compatible with mine, but I'll ask him to check the measurements.
