Temperature sensor

Post by KevR »

Right then. I'm trying to sort out all the bits I need to put a GTi dash in the TZD. Got the clocks (got two sets in fact - one for each car). Have ordered a remote T piece, suitable oil pressure sensor and oil pressure light switch. Oil temp sensor shouldn't be a problem except I'll need to take the sump off and braze on a boss for it.

However I'm struggling with the water temp sensor. Plan is to use the original 105 deg switch sensor (orange light) to connect to the red light as a just in case. So I need a progressive sensor for the gauge itself. But I'm struggling to find one the right thread - M14 x 1.25. I had thought I could just get one for a GTi but apparently not. Cit Service lists three sensors for the GTi - I'm guessing the 'Capteur de Temperature d'eau' is the one, part no 024246, but that's M12 x 1.5. The Thermocontact Eau Moteur is 14 x 1.5 (and it says '112 deg' which I assume means it's a switch). The 'Thermistance is M14 x 1.25 but that's the same part number as for the TD's red light switch so that's no good.

The only sensor I can find that looks possible is the one for cars with aircon - part number 0242 58. Right thread, but is it a switch or a progressive sensor... anyone know?

Otherwise there are plenty of sensors out there on eflog etc with the right thread but not easy to tell whether they are for a gauge or for a warning light.
Anyone got a specific reference they can share?

As is often the case, I think I've answered my own question five minutes after asking it.... The earlier BX GTi 16v oil temp sensor is 14 x 1.25, so that should also work fine as a water temp sensor - unless anyone knows different....?

I have fitted a digital temp gauge in my t/d, i removed one of the death switches from the stat housing (the one just under the intercooler) and fitted a temp sender from a Fiat Bravo/Brava?? which was the same thread either m14 or m12 i cant remember which, going on the basis that a "sender is a sender" or thereabouts, they all basically do the same job. Anyway it seems to work ok tho prob not terribly accurate but gives a good indication of wots going on under the bonnet, general running at 65/70 degrees and showing the cooling fans cutting in at approx 88/90 degrees it's good enough.

Agreed - relative temp is what's important. I wasn't expecting much in the way of accuracy even with the 'correcy' sensor. Trouble is that although a sensor is a sensor, it's often hard to tell what;s a sensor which will drive a gauge, and what's just an on/off switch like the originals for the orange and red lights.... Pretty sure I've got it sorted now.

From memory I'd have sworn that the water temperature senders/switches have a smaller diameter thread than M14 - have you actually physically measured? The AC temperature switch has two sets of contacts - the first for a warning light and I *think* that the second cuts out the AC when the engine temperature gets beyond a certain point.

The oil temperature sender should work, even if not completely accurate you will at least get an idea of general trends. I think most were M16 though so an earlier one may be harder to find.

Yep, measured with vernier caliper and thread gauge - M14 x 1.25. Also if you look on Cit service it actually specifies the threads. They may be different for different models, I haven't checked, but these are both early nineties TZDs (1990 and 1992, with the fuel filter next to the LHM reservoir) and the spare thermo housing I have (also from a 1990 TZD) is the same.

Good to know that the AC sensor won't work!

Easy enough to find the M14 x 1.25 GTi oil sender once you know the original part number and can cross-reference - found an QH alternative. QH number: XTT117.

Didn't mean to sound patronising BTW - just wondered if you were just going on parts listings...

They may be different on my late TD (with the fuel filter on top of the thermostat housing), but it's more likely just my memory failing me!

According to Cit Service, late ones are also M14 x 1.25...
