Heater tap issue

So I am trying to sort the lack of heating on my bx.
All the controls move properly and the pin moves up and down freely so I reasoned that it was the matrix.
I have removed the matrix and found it to be full of silt and started to celebrate but thought I would check that the tap was clear as well.
When I move the temperature control the pin moves but there is no sign of a slider to close the tap..
Has anyone taken a tap apart to fix one or is it time to find a new one?
