Interior Lights...

Post by Photeauart »

Any pointers please… 91reg TZi… interior lights were intermittent so cleaned/checked door switches. All good and they started working ok. Came on when opening doors then switched off when car started… after a couple of days stopped working altogether. Checked switches again with a fresh earth return as a test… No Go… the light do come on when switched on at the pillar. The door plan on the centre dash shows doors open when they are… front and rear... Except the drivers door which doesn't seem to show. Bonnet tally light likewise ok but boot tally Not showing. Boot light operates ok but the rear interior only works when switched to the permanently on position. If anyone knows what is supposed to happen and any ideas on where to look next… thank you in advance.

From what I can tell from the wiring diagrams, it looks like the interior light timer is not working. However I cannot tell you where that is located on the car.

Doesn't it lurk under the centre console between the seats? Or is that something else....?

From memory it towards the centre of the car behind the glovebox. You need to remove glovebox to access it.
They think it's all over, it is now!

Many thanks… the centre console widget is I believe part of the central locking control but what I didn't realise was that the doors open closed light thingy is operated off the actual locking mechanisms not the inner door switched on the A & B posts. On that basis your thoughts ref the delay relay seems in the right direction. I had a look underneath between the glovebox and heater controls and can't see anything of value. Actually got stuck upside down with my arms trapped which was a bit disconcerting to say the least. All on my own with just a torch in the dark! and my mobile phone left in the house. Not funny but you are allowed to laugh. Eventually wriggled/forced myself free. Note to self… don't do that again. When I've gotten over the trauma I'll try and have a look behind the glovebox if it's buried further back.

Hiya xjs36uk…. I'm looking in the haynes at the gti circuit diagram. Don't know if you have found it on the same/similar diagram. Do you know what the relay is called? Cheers, Phil

Hi Phil,
From what I was looking at, it's section 13.54, Diagram 6 - all models from 1987 - circuit IX. Unit 92, Interior Light Timer. Between lines 6-10
Hope this helps. As I mentioned before I don't know where it's located on the car though as I've never had a BX with that feature. Though I've heard behind the glove box and also under the steering column bottom cover. On that score it'll definitely require someone who knows.

Interior lights timer — LHD cars

Needed to locate this today.
For LHD, just lift out the upper glove compartment (4 plastic plugs + 2 cross-head screws), and the timer, with its 7-way brown connector, is on the left. Easy access.

After reconnecting, I found the unit required IGN to be briefly turned on (with doors closed) to resume working. May have been a one-off, though.

The Haynes* circuitry covering the Interior Lamp Timer #92 (and a unit location diagram) are Figs 13.70 and 13.71, Circuit IX — which has timer module, and the four door switches for later models. (#92 is missing from 13.70's component list, for some reason, but there on 13.71.)

* Haynes book #908, Cit BX Petrol 1983-91.
