TZD servicing

Post by morningglory »

Hi,

I'm pretty sure my accumulator is on its last gasps (pump clicking like mad and the regulator keeps spitting the return feed out) so I'm going to get all new spheres, clean out the reservoir and filter and put in new LHM.

While I have my wallet out, I'm wondering if its worth doing some other, bigger service jobs. I only have my Haynes manual, my two-out-of-five spannering skills, and my Dad's experience of restoring 1930's Austin Sevens to go on.

Anything worth pre-empting at this point? Water or HP pump? Some engine springs, glow plugs or injector work? I've gone from a Sunday driver to a 15,000 mile per year commuter so forgive me for being a bit paranoid. I thought I'd ask for nothing.

1994 TZD 60,000 miles
Running fine, no symptoms I'm aware of (apart from above) and no MOT advisories
Engine oil, engine oil filter, air and fuel filters every 6 months
New discs and pads all 'round last year
New HP belt last week
New timing belt and coolant a few years/15,000 miles ago
Front nearside hydraulic return and octopus this year
New fuel lines from tank
Fresh gearbox oil last year
Tyres new about 10,000 miles ago

Cheers,

Joe

The fast ticking could be as simple as a flat accumulator sphere.

I think you're right, but I'm going to change all the spheres while I'm at it (they're four years old now). Doesn't look like anyone else is telling me to get something looked at before it explodes or falls off, so I'll just do the spheres for now.

I would change the LHM and clean the filters at the same time, lovely low mileage one you have there!

How many years ago was the timing belt, if it's 5 years or me I would consider changing it.

As Tim says, LHM, Timing belt are the essentials. I personally wouldn't change the spheres unless they're flat. The only other thing to look at is the rear arm bearings. If the suspension is nice and soft they're probably ok. But whilie your under the car, take an hour and coat all the pipes with gearbox oil or veg oil and old engine oil, especially up the side of the fuel tank and over the n/s/r arm, an old 1" paint brush will come in handy. Messy job I know, but a lot easier than replacing the pipes because they've gone rusty.

Great stuff, thanks both.

I thought timing belts would last longer, but I'll put that on the to-do list for next year. For now, I'll crack on with changing the luminous alien blood and covering the pipes, and myself, in oil.

Engine, transmission, etc. oil will evaporate and/or wash off. Unless you are going to do that often. There are more suitable materials for that. look for something meant for under-body or temporary coating of heavy machinery. Something waxy or otherwise hydrophobic and "dry".

Regarding spheres, they should still be quite OK after 4 years, but it might be more economical to change them then inspect and refill, I don't know your prices.

Regulator will click often if: it is failing, accumulator sphere has failed, or there is a high flow demand somewhere. Once again, it all depends on prices, but I would first measure regulator output pressure to see what is happening there. Also, it is quite easy to find what is consuming flow by checking return pipes` flows at the LHM tank.

Would waxoil be any good? Got some kicking around but its pretty horrible stuff. Seems like it might cause a problem at the unions should the pipes ever need replacing.

Turns out it was just a flat accumulator. Very pleased I'm learning how to do this stuff myself, this forum is great.

Result there with the acc sphere then, your tick time should be somewhere about 40/60 secs
This is usually a good guide as to the condition of the hyd system. Did you bleed off any excess air via the bleed valve on the pressure regulator?

Ticking back to what it should be. Suspension goes up a bit quicker and smoother and steering is lighter as well. I followed the changing spheres thread in FAQs and did all the bleeding via the regulator valve as it said. Changed LHM and cleaned out reservoir and filters while I was at it.

The new HP belt I've put on still chirps a bit, though. Been on 20 odd miles now. I even got a helper to push the pump to tighten the belt as much as poss, before I tightened the mount and slider-bar bolts. Helped a bit but my engine doesn't have the jockey wheel.

Any tips on how to tighten it more?

I understood 30 seconds to be very good?

I would expect anything above 30secs to be ok both my t/d's run above 40secs tick time tho quite hard to hear it on a diesel.
