ABS Fault: the saga endeth!

Post by deltic »

Some may recall my ABS woes and (slightly desperate!) attempts to fix it in this thread: http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20911 and which I'm glad to rather belatedly report has now been fixed and the BX gaining another MOT.

Apart from those who previously advised me, my thanks go to Mark at Edwards & Sons who located the parts for a reasonable price and Barry at Bourne Citroen Centre who carefully worked out what turned out to be a succession of faults that went something like this:

1. The original rear ABS rather than the wiring had actually failed.

2. The first of my tested working spares was fitted, but then failed.

3.The second sensor was fitted, but there was still an ABS fault.

4.This fault then turned out to be a cracked front ABS ring which when replaced cured the ABS fault.

Although, we'll never know which was the original fault it was an unfortunate coincidence! In amongst all of this I think Barry also tried fitting a Xantia sensor, however this didn't work because the BX and Xantia hubs have a different number of teeth, although he is pretty certain that a BX fitted with Xantia hubs and sensors should work and is going to try this at some point. Xantia sensors are much cheaper and readily available.

Just for information the rear BX sensor I removed from a rear arm was manufactured by ATE (and fitted with Ford plugs) and had the following numbers on it if anyone would like to investigate further:

340.804/022/001
10.0721-1403.1
91540 29850

And they were Citroen part number: 91537913

At some point I might contact ATE to see if they can advise further.

Not quite endeth, I spoke too soon of course. After 6 weeks of not using the car over the Christmas period the ABS light came on again just when the car was due this year's MOT. So back to Barry again who patiently (thanks!) worked through the ABS system, got it working and got an MOT pass. But on the way back from the MOT test it failed again! As we both had spare ECUs we swapped the one on the car and it now seems OK. Probably. Another year for a fault to manifest itself before the next MOT...

Suggestions have been made on this thread that Xantia Mk 1 or Peugeot 405 ABS sensors may fit. Can anyone confirm this? I understand that the plug needs changing and it has been suggested that this only requires soldering. Is the cable a simple screened cable like an aerial cable? If not, how should the wiring be effected?
I'm a novice with this and my garage guy is reluctant to butcher a replacement unit unless he is sure what to do!

Yes, the cable is simple coax - like a tv aerial.

Not sure if 405 or xantia sensors will fit but if so, it's easy enough to do the join between old and new underneath the seats (if doing rears).

Except that the inner cable is multistranded not solid core. Realistically any type of screened cable seems to work.
