Help needed to swap my ECU

Post by ChuckNorris90 »

Hi everyone!

About a week ago or so my car stopped working, so I took her to my local workshop. There, the mechanic told me my ECU was "soaked" in water and hence useless. He also advised me to find a replacement in any local scrapping yard, so he can afterward 'prepare' it to work in my vehicle. The thing is I couldn't find any local scrapping yard nearby, so I decided to try internet, without much luck. Anyway, ¿do you guys know any trustworthy web site, where you can find electronic control units for a good price?. Thanks very much in advance!

Are we talking about the BX 14TGE? Unless Spain had different models to the UK (emissions), it won't have an ECU controlling the engine. What are the symptoms?

Really have no idea if Uk had different models to Spain. But certainly, my car does have some sort of ECU. There are no symptoms, the car just doesn't start at all. Greetings!

huum... I'm with mat, the BX 14TGE doesn`t have any ECU. Anyway, if you want to find control units you should try eBay first. If you can't find the unit you're looking for there, then you can go to this web --> https://www.ecumotorstock.com/en/. If I were you, I'd take my car to another workshop, for a probably more qualified opinion. Good luck!

Didn't Spain have the 1.6 injection engine? Poss Bosch/Motronic ECU
If it's is either or it should have a part number on it.
Then do a Google search.
If yours is a 1.6 injection there could be possibility it may share the same ECU as a Peugeot 205/309 it may be worth doing some research.
I assume your mechanic has checked the coil, leads, distributor etc etc?

He says he has. Anyway, I'm going to ask him to give me the ECU so I can search it by its part number. One more question: Do I need to do any extra steps or by just buying the same part number it will do the trick?. Thanks!

I don't know I can't answer that, I don't know your car I don't know what's wrong with it, I would certainly look at cheaper options first.
ECU's can be repaired.
If your car is a 1.6 Spanish specific then it's highly unlikely you will get spare parts from the UK as this car was never sold here, all UK 1.6 litre had carburettor not EFI.

Where is your ECU? Is it mounted on the air intake box?

Swapping the ECU the 99% of the times isn't enough. You also need to copy the old software from the broken unit to the new one. Otherwise, your car won't start.

I doubt that very much on a car of BX vintage. [-X

Swap in one of the same part number, that is known to be working, and you'll either sort your problem out or eliminate the ECU from your investigation.

Fingers crossed for you!

I was surprised to hear that a 1.4 BX had an ECU as I've only had carburettor models here in the UK. They must have had tighter emission controls in Spain at the time. I presume your car is right at the end of production then?

Hi guys!

I have bought an identical ECU, in eBay. And by identical, I mean with the same part number. The car is working fine now. It's been 4 days since the swap and everything seems to work as usual. Thanks to everyone for the help. I couldn't have done it without you!.

It is good to see a happy ending.
The Joy of BX with just one Citroën BX to my name now. Will I sing Bye Bye to my GTI or will it be Till death us do part.
