Bought a BX
Hi i just paid £750 for a BX 17 turbo diesel with full mot, a nice interior and exterior, but very high miles and a clutch on the way out soon. 201,000 miles,
5 owners. Is that cheap, okay or expensive in your view? i am just curious.
Thanks.

Re: Bought a BX
Doesn't sound expensive, the days of BX's for £50 with MOT are long gone as have most of the cars sadly.
These car if maintained will do huge mileages, and are mechanically simple, but tend to rot away underneath but if you have a fresh MOT that's a good start!
Is the clutch slipping or is the bite low to the floor, as the cable is adjustable and that may help? (plenty on here on how to adjust)
First things first, if you intend to keep it make sure the cambelt and tensioner has been done recently, they can snap and snap the camshaft and basically scrap the car, also change the fluids including LHM.
Welcome aboard and don't forget to check out the facebook page.

Re: Bought a BX
Join the turbo diesel club, should be nicely run in at that mileage, mines on 294k and it's 3rd clutch and just recently at 284k needed the turbo rebuilt
Think Tim has given you the lowdown
Great job look after it.
Clutches are reasonably easy to do I've done loads but only use Valeo as cheap ones are rubbish

Re: Bought a BX
Another TD owner here - mine is on 264k - as said keep on top of them and they'll go on forever! Headgaskets can be an issue so I would recommend a full coolant flush along with belt and water pump change if there isn't any supporting evidence of this work having been done recently.
As for clutches I can't advise, Ive done 107k of my own miles on my current clutch and have no idea if it's been done before I got the car.
£750 seems like a good price, I paid £400 with tax and test 7 years ago for mine with 157k on but take into account that the number cars has dropped in that time and well as more people seeing the BX as a modern classic/retro cool car than a cheap banger then yeah. £750 seems solid.

Re: Bought a BX
I fitted a digital water temp gauge to mine-easy to source and fit, don't rely on the "lamp of eternal death" as it will be too late your engine will have already cooked.

Re: Bought a BX
I’ve recently bought a 1992 1.9TGD for £750. Seems a solid enough car, and it’s in lovely cosmetic condition, inside and out, but it came with very little history, so the advice on cam belt and coolant flushing is gratefully received! It’s slower than Donald Trump, but, for me, that’s part of its charm. A few issues I had with it were: A - poor cold starting. A tenner’s worth of glow plugs sorted that out. B - squealing belts. This must be the easiest alternator I’ve ever adjusted. C - warning light on the cash. A top-up of the LHM fluid, and it’s purring! It was bought as a ‘winter smoker’ to keep my old Alfa Spider ofF the salty winter roads, but I think I’m starting to love it .........!

Re: Bought a BX
Any solid BX without rust in the key places is worth £750 IMO.

Re: Bought a BX
A 1.9d BX isn’t that slow, I would check that the throttle pedal isn’t broken, bent and your getting full throttle and under full acceleration
Also sometimes some injector cleaner and fresh filter can help!

Re: Bought a BX
Thanks to all for the very welcome advice. I took it for a longer drive yesterday, and it’s actually a bit more ‘sprightly’ than I first thought. I think I’m maybe comparing it unfavourably to previous classics I’ve owned, which have mainly been more ‘sporty’ cars! It definitely needs a service and, as suggested, a coolant flush and cam belt. Can anyone recommend a good parts supplier? I’m struggling to find some bits and bobs that I could do with - other than servicing bits, parts seem to be fairly rare...?? All in, even though it was bought as a winter hack, I’m loving the old thing, and I reckon I’ll keep it. It gets a lot more attention than my 1996 Alfa Sider!

Re: Bought a BX
The 1.9 engine does work best when being revved, it may have been driven slowly by the previous owner for years, which does make them really sluggish. Put some v power diesel in, some injector cleaner & give it an italian tune-up Be prepared for plenty of smoke to begin with, haha...

Re: Bought a BX
And do away with the very restrictive standard air filter and fit an aftermarket decent panel filter for 25 quid, personally not a big fan of the 19d, a good plodder and economical but I needed earplugs in mine at anything over 60mph.
Taxi drivers and the caravan club were quite Fond of the 19d back in the day clocking up 3/400k's
For parts your local factor's should be able to supply cambelt kits and pump or online Gates kits with tensioner come in around £100ish
Depends on which other bits you're after, plenty of spares out there with some bits being remade.
Post up what you need sure someone can help.
