Removing Roof Gutter Trims

Post by vulgalour »

How do you remove the roof gutter trims on the hatchback? I suspect I've got a leaking seam in that area and I'd like to remove the trims without breaking anything on the process. I've had a gentle pry and prod at the trims and can't find any sort of movement, thought it best to ask before I attempt to force anything in a direction it doesn't want to go.

If you do manage to get them off, could you post some pictures of what's underneath them as it may help others in the future.

Good luck.

Well, that's going to take some thinking about then. Anyone know what they're bonded on with? I'm assuming some sort of glue rather than foam strips or similar. Them being bonded does rather explain why they seemed so reluctant to move.

Your other option is to remove the headlining..

It is apparently a very tricky job to get them off intact. They are bonded on so heat and patience are required because they crack very easily. Here is a couple of pics showing what you are up against.
You would need to be 100% sure that they need to come off before you embark on the job because there is no going back. It might be better to reseal the trims in situ.

I have been sensible and after finding out they're bonded on, I bought myself some Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure. I'm moderately certain the leak is either from the roof trims or the windscreen surround and I also know it's a very tiny leak, so this stuff should do the trick. If I can stop the water getting in, then I shan't need to dismantle things just yet. Dropping the headlining or removing the dashboard is a little tricky at the moment since the BX is on daily driver duties for the forseeable, but these are both jobs I will be doing at some point in the future to inspect everything and get some peace of mind, even if I do stop the water coming in, because it's nice to know all this stuff is good regardless.
