I am working a 1993 BX19 TXD that was stationary for few years,
all systems ok other than a leaky pipe.
The pipe in question is a transparent rigid plastic of 4mm (OD),open ended on one side and goes into a pipe junction
which seem to connect the rear metal pipes,
for the life of me I can not see where the open end is suppose to connect to?
as it only leak few drips per second I am guessing it must be a return/overflow pipe?
also LHM tank cap has a T with two similar pipes - on of those is also open ended (going towards driver) (see pic)
my other question - short of flushing the LHM is there a way to stem/stop the fluid from going down the pipes
while the engine is off?
Many thanks
PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
The pipe from the LHM tank is just a breather, it ends near the sphere. I have turned it back in the pic. to show you.

Thanks Dave,
what about the offending pipe - where do you think that should go?

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
There should be a rubber "y" connector around the steering rack area, where you've found that pipe. It connects the security valve & pressure regulator low pressure returns together and to the dreaded octopus. My car returns a fair amount of oil through these pipes, so you'll need to repair it properly. There should be 3 of those pipes that look the same in the vicinity.
There is also another one nearby, that looks the same, that goes into the steering rack, so don't mix them up. The one from the steering rack goes to the breather on the LHM tank lid. The pipe on the other side of the lid just sits inside the wing as a breather.
You could temporarily plug a pipe by inserting it into a rubber hose and inserting a nut, nail or something equivalent into the other side, but don't run the engine like that or you might burst a seal somewhere if oil can't get back when it needs to.
Hope that helps.

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
I cannot get at mine to have a check but I know there is a gland on the steering ram. The pipe may have come out of that, especially if the small outlet has broken off, that maybe why you cannot see where it goes. Chevronics amongst other places sell them. Worth checking it's condition in any case.

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
Thank you David,
Thank you Dave_16v, that's what happen!, from above as I put my hand down to check - "something" came off the end of the leaky pipe,
I am yet to find what fell off.
so what you are saying is that this gland goes over the the steering ram like a ring?
if that is the case - to fix it I will have to remove the s ram to fit the glad over it?
I think we are getting somewhere

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
I think I can answer my own question ... just saw a pic of how the gland sits at the end of the steering ram,
easy/hard to fix?

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
Relatively easy. Just undo the bolt end where the gland fits, loosen the torx the other end and you should be able to move the ram away just enough to remove the gland and slide the new one in. It is a bit tight next to the rack but not too bad that way. Doing it on the ground is the part that makes it harder, on a ramp everything is far better.

Re: PLease help with this leaky hydraulic pipe
What a community! very helpful indeed.
Thank you all guys,
but the award goes to David (the one from Manchester),
after bit of perseverance I found the Y connector which was well cooked,
I am hopeful that I can install a new connector by access from the engine comp between the bat and hyd pump,
having smaller hands should help (small fingers x'ed )
