New Citroën BX 19 TGD Rev Counter - Rear arm bearings - Engine Mounting Bush - Fuel Filter

Hello,

Back in the 1990’s I sat in a brand new Citroën BX, but as I was only just starting out I just couldn’t afford to buy one. Fast forward a couple of decades after the usual distractions (family, job, life) and I’ve reached a point when I realised owning a BX is a bucket list item for me. Waking up to this, I found a 1991 Citroën BX 1.9 TGD, in pretty good condition to be fair, but 30 years has taken its toll and she needs some work. According to the engine block this is for a XUD9-D9B engine.The problem is I’m no mechanic, so after searching through the forums I’ve taken a few pointers and it would be reassuring if someone has the part numbers or could confirm I’ve got the right bits for a Citroën BX 1.9 TGD ?

Rev Counter
The Rev counter has packed up and I think it needs a replacement Flywheel sensor. Do you think this would sort it? TBH I don’t know the difference between a camshaft sensor and a crankshaft sensor:

“The sensor is indeed the most common fault. You should measure a resistance in the 100ohm range (test at the brown connector, disconnected!). Could also be possible that the sensor is not close enough to the flywheel, the gap needs to be as narrow as possible. To adjust its position, loosen the little screw on the plastic mounting.

The connections at the back side of the rev counter instrument are: (blue connector)
Pin #1: +12V (over ignition and fuse F1)
Pin #2: Ground
Pin #3&4: The sensor (via the brown connector behind the battery)

The F1 fuse (the very left) is also worth checking (first of all!), blown fuse = no rev counter!”



Rear arm bearings
I drove to get the 20 year tyres (really!) replaced, but touching the wheels must have done something to the bearings: the rear tyres are now rubbing on the wheel arch and the wheels waggle like a duck. Engine Mounting Bush
The engine is making a knocking sound as its running and I think the lower engine mounting bush has perished. Is this a good replacement?

Fuel Filter

That all looks about right to me, be aware when buying rear arm rebuild kits-the cheaper ones are rubbish and poor quality and won't last long, expect to pay around £60 per side for decent quality kits also ensure they come complete with the bearings as some dont.
Your local motor factors should be able to get most if not all that you need.

Welcome to BX ownership. A world of great pleasure and also frustration at times.

Rev counter: That might be suitable. But first see if it really is the sensor by doing the checks you have listed and look for bad connections or broken wires. Somebody on here might have a used one for sale.

Rear arm bearings: That is the right picture but the description says it is a strut repair kit. I think Chevronics sell the correct item. But you say the wheels wobble. If so then this is more likely to be the wheel bearing which is replaced with a new hub. Eurocarparts sell these.It is easy to check which it is by the way.

Lower engine bush: These serve to absorb engine movement fore and aft. Check other stuff first for your noise as these bushes are unlikely to fail and become noisy. They are not easy to change for a non mechanical owner so look elsewhere first.

Fuel filter: That is the wrong one as you will have the filter housing with a plunger on top. Any motor factor will have the correct one.

I might have a rev counter pick up kicking around tho new ones are available on ebay for around £20, I'm sure I got my arm kits from GSF for around £45 per side not stock item but in for next day.

Wheel Hub
Based on your advice I've ordered a pair of wheel hubs from europart because it makes sense (there's also a 365 day return policy in case they don't fit but I'm sure they do). For anyone in the same boat as me, the chevronics link is

Rear arm bearing
As I was afraid these parts would not be available as there were only 3 left (I didn't see your advice in time) I ordered the rear arm wheel wheel bearing (30 day return policy) from https://www.mister-auto.ie/suspension-s ... kda-23001/ - this is described as an advisory to replace on the MOT. You are spot on with the prices: there are cheap kits (about £24) and this kit which was £62.88 x 2

rutter123 - if you have the sensor for a diesel I would snatch your hand off. eBay is awash with sensors but knowing the difference between a petrol and a diesel sensor is not clear from the descriptions. If you find one I will see you right.

I'll revisit this once the other stuff is sorted. Until the bearings are replaced its just not drivable.

This is a labour of love because the prices are not cheap (!)

If you search Citroen C15 van rear arm kits they are basically the same kit of parts apart from the long bolt which is slightly longer on the van, you could re-use yours, they sometimes come up at bargain prices to sell NOS.

Can't help on the pick up sensor thought I mite have one kicking around but appears not,
All diesels are fitted with a sensor tho some don't have a rev counter, I believe it's something to do with factory settings, if you can find a breaker you may get lucky.

Rev Counter or ‘crankshaft/camshaft’ sensor
Hi rutter123 - appreciate you looking for this sensor, but I couldn't take your last one.

I found this site https://www.bxig.net/kaufberatung-citroen-bx/ which has a number of articles advising how to find parts from service.citroen.com (but you need to register as a professional to access), and www.daparto.de and www.rexbo.de

You need to define your vehicle, including the specific engine and then a list of parts are shown for that vehicle. You can use Google to translate the site into English. One of the difficulties I found confusing was the difference between the speed sensor and the rev counter sensor, but I believe the rev counter is called a ‘crankshaft sensor’ or ‘Nockenwellposition’ (German).

I found the VEMO sensor on these sites and double checked by searching on the VEMO web site using Citroën + BX(XB-_) + 19D + VEMO
During this search, I realised that even though mister-auto.co.uk, buycarparts.co.uk and autoparts.co.uk look like UK companies they are all actually German retailers who ship from Germany. This explains why delivery takes over 7 days.

I searched for my car on this web site (€ 98.83) which shows both sensors. That’s how I found the (“camshaft position”) OEM number: 12147539166

I searched on Amazon using the OEM as a key and found the same Delphi sensor for £38.58 inc shipping, so I've requested that part.

Purflux fuel filters

For a 1991 Citroën BX 19 TGD the selection is for a BX 19 Turbo Diesel, but the TGD has no turbo, even though the year is correct. I called someone in the Purflux technical department to confirm which would be the appropriate fuel filter and discovered that in 1987, Citroën must have changed the engine numbering (mine is XUD-D9B), but that is not listed. Searching for an appropriate part and comparing it with competitor’s product (who may have listed the engine), revealed that the best fit would be the filter for the BX 19 Turbo Diesel entry. This is Purflux “C180”, which I believe is the OEM filter. They also make the same fuel filter with different brand versions: FRAM “C4891” and Coopers FIAAM “FA5054”. The filter itself (Length 100mm, Outer diameter 65mm, inner diameter 14mm) is an insert to replace the contents of the existing filter which unscrews. Haynes advise removing the entire housing to avoid spilling fuel.
